Discussion about Safety and Traffic Issues

General Meeting: Purpose to discuss the most important traffic and safety concerns throughout the entire neighborhood.

March 3: Highfield Road Repairs Caused Traffic Issues
A portion of Highfield Road between Charles Street and the alley behind Cloverhill Road was closed for road repairs. Unfortunately, the construction crew erected a Road Closed sign where the road was actually closed and not at the intersection of Highfield and Canterbury Road. As a result, a number of cars dropping off kids at Calvert School in the morning tried to exit the neighborhood on Highfield Road and had to do a u-turn back to Canterbury Road. Unfortunately, a couple of cars ended up speeding down Cloverhill the wrong way. As soon as Calvert learned that Highfield was closed, they directed all cars to make a right on Canterbury.
As a result of this incident, several neighbors contacted the TCNA expressing concerns about Calvert School traffic, particularly speeding, congestion, and inappropriate driving. The TCNA-Calvert Liaison Committee has worked hard monitoring Calvert traffic and reporting violations to Calvert as they occur and at their quarterly meetings. A number of changes have been made to improve things according to Amy Mutch who chairs the committee. However, the TCNA Board decided to take this opportunity to survey the community about traffic safety concerns in other parts of the neighborhood as well.
Tuscany Road
The Streets Committee has contacted the Department of Transportation to conduct a speeding survey on Tuscany Road, but that has not been conducted yet. There have also been requests for additional painted crosswalks and parking restrictions to make intersections safer. Several residents have proposed other traffic calming/safety ideas that should be considered in an overall plan.
