Tariffs Start to Put Cost Pressures on Construction Materials
Construction input prices increased 0.6% in February, but certain materials are seeing more substantial increases, including iron and steel, which rose 3.9%; softwood lumber, which rose 2.8%; and steel mill products, which rose 2.7%.

Fed Holds Main Rate Steady, Forecasts Higher Inflation, Slower Growth
Fed Chair Jerome Powell said “The new administration is in the process of implementing significant policy changes in four distinct areas — trade, immigration, fiscal policy and regulation. It is the net effect of these policy changes that will matter for the economy and for the path of monetary policy."
“While there have been recent developments in some of these areas, especially trade policy, uncertainty around the changes and their effects on the economic outlook is high,” he said. “As we parse the incoming information, we’re focused on separating the signal from the noise” when considering changes to monetary policy.

Large Construction Firms Expand Backlogs as Smaller Firms Struggle
Larger firms, or those with over $100M in revenue, are expanding their project pipelines. Public construction firm executives recently brushed off tariff and policy concerns, citing strong demand for massive infrastructure, data centers and energy projects. Smaller firms, on the other hand, face headwinds as backlog declines. Nevertheless, many industry insiders still expects a bounceback in business conditions this year.
