Friday Devotional:
Psalm 147:12-20
When the elementary school in our town underwent a major renovation last year, top on the list of needs was a safer, more secure, main entrance. Now a daytime visitor gets buzzed into an entry zone fully visible to the office staff before being granted passage through a second set of locked doors.
All of us are sadly aware of how an inadequate or untended security system in a place where children gather can open the door to danger. What about our spiritual house, where there are children of God of all ages? Does it not need protection as well?
The defense our souls need is a defense of God's Word. God's commandments make visible those influences and actions that would do us harm. God's promises tell us who we really are - God's beloved children - when condemning lies threaten us. Gates aren't all bad! Jesus himself said, "I am the gate for the sheep" (John 10:7). Yes, God opens that gate for you - and wants you to play in peace as well!
God, our stronghold, guard our going out and our coming in, today and always. Amen.
