Species Highlight!

Today we are discussing Carolina Wrens! Who doesn't adore these guys? They are quick and cute and charismatic, ever present, and delightful! Also, couple goals, according to All About Birds, "A pair bond may form between a male and a female at any time of the year, and the pair will stay together for life. Members of a pair stay together on their territory year-round, and forage and move around the territory together." So sweet!

Carolina Wrens are spunky little birds that love dense cover and cozy nesting spots. If you are thinking of encouraging wrens to nest in your yard, or more likely, encouraging them to nest in a box rather than somewhere weird like a wreath, grill, or kayak, here’s what you’ll want to provide:

  • Nest boxes: Use small, open-front boxes (similar to ones used for House Wrens, bluebirds, or chickadees). Place boxes about 5–10 feet off the ground, ideally near dense vegetation.
  • Pole system: To prevent predation, you will want to mount your nest box on a pole and use a baffle. This will help keep out snakes and mammalian predators.
  • Nest materials: Wrens love moss, twigs, dry leaves, pine needles, feathers, and grass. You can leave little piles of these nearby or tuck some into shrubs. Additionally, you can use a nesting cup as you would for a bluebird nest.
  • Food resources: Like most species, wrens will feed nestlings insects so they grow fast and strong. Offering live or dried mealworms, as well as suet will help your wrens during the breeding season.
