IDIDAHIKE 2025: A Day of Hiking and Community on the Cross Florida Greenway

IDIDAHIKE 2025 was a tremendous success! The event brought together hikers of all skill levels for a memorable day on the scenic Cross Florida Greenway. Hosted by the Florida Trail Association's Sandhill Chapter, the event was centered around the Ross Prairie Trailhead and Campground, which as the hub for an adventure-filled day on the trails.

Hikers had the opportunity to embark on routes of varying distances along the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST), with shuttle services provided to trailheads. Participants could choose from the following routes:

10.7 miles from the Landbridge Trailhead to Ross Prairie; 6.9 miles from 49th Street to Ross Prairie; 4.5 miles from Shangrila Campground to Ross Prairie.

This section of the Florida Trail along the Cross Florida Greenway winds through the historically significant grounds of the planned Cross Florida Barge Canal, a massive infrastructure project that was initially proposed in the 19th century and later partially constructed in the 1960s before being halted due to environmental concerns. The remnants of the canal, including abandoned dig sites, levees, and excavation scars, serve as a reminder of the ambitious yet controversial project. This unique terrain offers notable elevation changes and stunning shaded forests of new growth that have reclaimed the landscape over time.

Beyond the hikes, IDIDAHIKE 2025 fostered a strong sense of community with an array of engaging activities, including food and beverage options from a variety of food trucks, a silent auction, musical entertainment, and guest speakers throughout the afternoon.

More than just a day of adventure, IDIDAHIKE 2025 served as a key fundraiser for the Florida Trail Association, ensuring the continued maintenance and preservation of this invaluable trail system.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Sandhill Chapter for their incredible efforts in organizing this event and making it such a success. Additionally, we sincerely thank our generous sponsors—Publix, Felburn Foundation, Pearl BBQ, Duke Energy, Jenkins Subaru of Ocala, Athletic Brewing, General RV Center, Calhoun International, Team Cone, and Raymond James—whose support made this event possible.

Looking ahead, the Choctawhatchee Chapter in the Florida Panhandle has stepped up to host next year’s IDIDAHIKE, promising another incredible day of hiking and camaraderie. Stay tuned for more details, and we hope to see you on the trail in 2026!
