This BobBlast is all about COLOR. Specifically about using a great tool in the studio, a Color Wheel.
Why use a color wheel? Because they work! Here are a few points:
•Painting with a Color Wheel is a great guide to get started
•Helps me focus on specific colors instead of all the colors
•Uses color combos to create harmony or tension
•Shows the relationship of colors to each other
Before starting a painting, I always consider the 5 Cs:
•Concept
•Composition
•Color Combination
•Commit to the Series
•Continue the Series
My Goof-Proof Color Wheel is based on the Munsell Color System. It has 10 colors instead of the 12 colors on the standard, universal color wheel. I paint with only 4 colors, using the Goof-Proof Color Wheel.
First, establish the Dominant Color. The Color Wheel points to the Focal Point Color and 2 supporting “Spice Colors”. Here is the easy formula:
•Dominant Color - 80%
•Focal Point Color- 10%
•Two Spice Colors - 5% each
•Plus black and white
So, for any painting I am starting, I think of the concept and painting title first. Secondly, I decide on my overall composition. Then I decide on my color combination. I always begin painting loosely on the canvas or watercolor paper.
Color combination studies are a fun way to start any studio day!
