"We're here all year" is the this year's theme for Developmental Disability Awareness Month. It offers a reminder that awareness months are not the only time to advocate for a world where all people can thrive.

Welcome Note

In light of recent executive orders and policies targeting immigrants, we want to make clear that we stand strong in our mission to foster an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of their background, can learn, grow, and thrive. We understand the urgency of providing a safe and welcoming space for all students, and we are taking a number of steps to ensure our students feel knowledgeable and supported, such as incorporating Know Your Rights into the classroom, prioritizing student data privacy, and ensuring our staff is trained on what to do should Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) enter our center or off-site classes.

We will continue to update you as we learn new information, but our students and their safety and well-being will always be in the forefront of our minds as we navigate these changes.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.

Women's History Month

This year's theme for Women's History Month, "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations", seems especially fitting for the work we do at Literacy Source. We are proud to be led by strong, passionate women— 96% of our staff are women who bring their expertise, empathy, and commitment to every aspect of our work. As well, nearly three-quarters of our student body identifies as female, many of whom have faced uniquely difficult challenges on their way to Literacy Source. We celebrate you today and every day.

Volunteer Obituaries

Kyle was a valued part of the Literacy Source community for over 9 years, donating over 1,000 hours to tutoring and as a class assistant. She was a truly caring and thoughtful volunteer and the students loved working with her. She was one of the few tutors who tutored 2 students at the same time, neither of them wanted to give her up! Later on in her service she transitioned into the Citizenship program. These students need a special kind of tutor...

Nina was a valued member of the library volunteer team for 5 years, donating approximately 185 hours. We were lucky enough that Nina brought her SPL skills at a crucial time in our library development. She helped us transition the library to the digital world, creating a working catalog and implementing an online circulation system...

Our thoughts are with the families of both of these incredible volunteers, and we are so grateful that their legacies will continue with the generous financial support from their family and friends. For more information on how you can leave a lasting legacy for Literacy Source, please reach out to Stacey, our Fund Development Manager.

You are Invited: Listening Party

UW English faculty Cristina Sanchez-Martín and graduate student/former Literacy Source instructor Taiko Aoki-Marcial would like to invite Literacy Source staff, volunteers and community to a “Listening party” at Literacy Source on March 11th, 2025 from 1:15 to 3 pm.

During this community gathering, guests will be invited to engage with an ongoing collaborative, multilingual storytelling project in which Literacy Source students have participated. We will look at the information on the project website and think about accessibility and language together.

We will have refreshments and treats as well, so it is also an excuse just to get together and meet the people who have been part of our project.
