Wear Pink for Gaudete Sunday
The third Sunday of Advent is known as the “Rejoice Sunday” from the Latin Gaudete. Some churches also celebrate Mary’s Sunday on this day, but the proper readings for Mary do not come in our Lectionary until December 22 this year. Traditionally, we wear pink colored clothing and vestments on this Third Sunday, as we rejoice in anticipation for the birth of Christ. These themes of rejoicing come from the readings for this Sunday: Zephaniah 3:14-20, “Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!”, the First Song of Isaiah (Isaiah 12:2-6,) “Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation… Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel,” and from Philippians 4:4-7, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” If you wear pink to celebrate Mary, you may want to wait until 12/22, but if you traditionally wear pink to celebrate Gaudete, then we welcome your bright colorful expressions on the 15th.
