Projects Update from Jacob Fercho, Land & Habitat Coordinator

We are gearing up for an eventful spring/summer season here at the ASCCA on the land and habitat side of things! There are plenty of exciting projects in the works, from the building of a native plant garden/plant bank site, setting up a solar-powered aeration system for the Goodwin Reservoir, completing the mapping of all fences on-site, and a new and improved site map using our recently completed land cover classification.

There will be continued focus on wetland restoration in the Pine Creek Valley, involving activities such as Beaver Dam Analogue construction/maintenance with Cows & Fish, as well other initiatives to encourage beaver activity.

Last summer we saw continued reduction of noxious weed infestations, and we will be working hard to continue that trend. There will be lots more bushwhacking/horseback riding looking for invasive weeds, and we have already begun setting up volunteers with a custom smartphone app for logging locations of invasives on a live map.

We continue to be extremely grateful for everyone who dedicates their time and effort towards helping the habitat prosper and keeping the facilities maintained in the area, so I would like to extend a big thank-you from myself and the team here at the ASCCA!

Learn about the fascinating ladybug life cycle.

Critter Feature - Ladybugs!

ASCCA volunteer Susan Wooding would like to remind fellow gardeners and nature lovers that although they may look unfamiliar, ladybug larvae are not pests.

This spring, be mindful when clearing away plant and leaf litter, or leave it be - you never know what may be living underneath.
