Sears Gives Updates on Enrollment, Staffing, Finances

The Kings Board and Administration has worked to positively impact the budget by generating revenue or implementing cost efficiencies resulting in 7.2 million dollars in the last 2 years. This initiative from the Board and administration has been implemented without disrupting the classroom experience and academic focus in our district. The goal is to increase that number to 8 million dollars in 2026. The District is always looking at ways to become more efficient but continue to maintain high academic environments for our staff and students.

Kings just recently reached over 5,000 students. Since 2015, Kings has increased enrollment by nearly 900 students. Currently, there are 300 more students in grades 1-6 than in 7-12, and several of those classes have reached the 400 per class mark. As the district continues to grow, there is also an increase in the diverse needs of the student population.

Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears presented to the Kings Board of Education last week. In his presentation, Mr. Sears showed comparisons of staffing, enrollment, cost per pupil, administrative costs per pupil, and state revenue to neighboring school districts as well as statewide peer districts; those districts in Ohio that are similar to Kings. To summarize, here are a few points that he made:

  • The state vastly underfunds Kings to educate our rapidly growing population of English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Kings has highly efficient staffing ratios compared to neighbor and statewide peer districts.
  • Kings has significantly lower per-pupil expenditures than the average of our statewide peer group (Average: $16,024, Kings—$14,596).
  • Kings is increasing in enrollment but receiving less state funding.
  • Kings receives less money from the state than all of our neighbor peers, with the exception of Sycamore. Kings receeives$3,555 (Mason receives $1,000 more per student, Lebanon receives $1,600 more and Loveland receives $700 more).

To learn more, watch Mr. Sears' presentation.

State Budget Makes Cuts to Kings Funding

Last week we told you about how Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's initial state budget cuts Kings’ funding by approximately $2,000,000 in school years 2025-2027. See the graph below that illustrates the drop in state funding.

We are collaborating with state and county advocacy groups, as well as community members to push for adjustments to the budget proposal which will provide essential resources for our growing diverse student population and support property tax relief for elderly and disabled residents, If you would like to help advocate to protect Kings’ funding, you can take action by contacting our state legislators. Simply use this form letter and send it to these legislators and their aides.

Kings Treasurer Mike Morrow explained more about the state budget at last week's Board Work Session. Please contact Mr. Morrow, at mmorrow@kingslocal.net with any questions regarding the state budget or Kings finances.

Teen World Mental Wellness Day

This semester, seven Kings High School students along with sixteen students from Mason High School, have participated in a Skilled Trades Workshop, gaining hands-on experience in electrical wiring, plumbing, construction, and roofing alongside skilled trades professionals.

Every Tuesday, the students visit the MADE Hub for Manufacturing in Mason which is a shared office and manufacturing space that helps support entrepreneurs. There, they are building two 12' x 8' sheds that will be raffled off with all proceeds going toward funding next year’s Skilled Trades Workshop.

See the flyer below that has a QR code link to purchase raffle tickets or use this direct link to purchase. Thank you for your support!

Kings Engineering Student Wins Competition

Congratulations to Kings High School Engineering student, Brayden Sparks who, with his team, placed first out of 14 teams at the GE Aerospace Learning Experience on March 15.

Brayden and a few other Kings High School students worked with other engineering students from around the city and participated in a challenge where they had to brainstorm, research, and build a solution to a real-world project.

Students had a chance to listen to industry career talks led by experienced professionals and take a tour of the GE Aerospace Learning Center where they saw modern manufacturing in action.

As a first place winner, Brayden won a $100 VISA gift card!

JFB Staff Learn From Local Teachers

Staff from J.F. Burns Elementary spent a day in the Forest Hills School District last week observing teachers who incorporate personalized learning strategies into their daily instruction.

The JFB personalized learning team consisted of classroom teachers, an intervention specialist, a building administrator, and our district coaches. The team spent time learning from K-6 students and teachers on how they can shift their instructional mindset to include Personalized Learning components such as student, classroom, and grade level goal setting, student voice and choice in learning, opportunities for independent and/or collaborative work, flexible learning environments, student feedback from teachers or peers, data tracking, learning menus, mastery grids, and the importance of ensuring students are able to voice the what and why for their learning!

A huge THANK YOU to the staff and students at Summit, Ayer, and Maddux elementary schools as well as the Forest Hills' district coaches for hosting our team!
