Alumni Association Wraps Up Fundraising Drive

Hope all enjoyed the messages sent out in March with quotes from Albert Einstein. A big thank you to all who made donations. A few donors encountered a glitch that will be attended to in the coming month (in case you’d still want to donate, hopefully!)

Plans to spend Alumni Association funds in the remainder of the academic year include: two First in the Family Scholarships, a retirement gift for Peter Smeallie (Einstein’s music and theater director for 39 years), and a suitable gift to the school on behalf of the Alumni Association.

Sports Update: The Washington Post’s 2024-25 All-Met team For Wrestling

Last month we told you about Einstein's three state champs. The Washington Post recently included them in their picks for the D.C. area’s top wrestling performers. Stone Yuen is in the First team and Isaac Ogunlade and Joshua Ogunlade are in the second team.

Mary E. (Richardson) Kenefick

Class of 1965

October 7, 1947 – February 20, 2025

Mary Beth (Richardson) Kenefick died peacefully on February 20, 2025, at the Regency Park Memory Care Center in Gambrills, MD. Born on September 7, 1947, in Washington, D.C., to Helen Payne Richardson and Dr. Francis Xavier Richardson, Mary Beth attended St. Michael’s Catholic School in Silver Spring before graduating from Einstein High School in Kensington in 1965. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art in 1981. At 40, she embarked on a distinguished federal career, beginning with an internship at the General Services Administration. Her commitment and expertise led her to pivotal roles at the Department of Commerce and the National Weather Service headquarters at NOAA in Silver Spring, where she contributed meaningfully to public service until her retirement in 2010. After a fulfilling career, Mary Beth faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease with the same grace and courage that marked her entire life. Her move from Montgomery County to Annapolis in 1986 was a dream realized—a chance to embrace the serene beauty of life on the Chesapeake Bay and create cherished memories with her family. Mary Beth is lovingly survived by her husband of 58 years, Greg Kenefick; her son, Patrick Kenefick (Marnie); her daughters, Lisa Anne Gebbia (Tony) and Tara Janine Landis (Bob); and her seven grandchildren. She was the last surviving sibling among five Richardson offspring. She was preceded in death by her beloved siblings: Patricia Anne Wiggins, Francis Xavier “Buddy” Richardson, James Michael Richardson, and Gerald Thomas Richardson. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the coming weeks as family and friends gather to honor Mary Beth’s extraordinary journey and the legacy of love and resilience she leaves behind. Condolences may be made by using the Memories link on the Kalas Funeral Home webpage.

Suzanne Sievers Boyd

She met her husband, Jay, at the College of Wooster and graduated from there in 1969. She passed away just shy of their 47th wedding anniversary. Suzanne was passionate about education and a P.E.O. member. She served as New Mexico State President from 2003-2004. Having a creative eye, she also worked in interior design for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Jean Sievers; and her brother, John Sievers. Memorial contributions can be made to the Jane and Suzanne Boyd P.E.O. Scholarship Fund through the P.E.O. Foundation or to Presbyterian Hospice.

Gregory Howard Sears

Class of 1965

September 27, 1947 – August 23, 2024

Gregory Howard Sears passed away at age 76 on August 23, 2024 from complications of cancer. Greg was born in Washington, D.C. on September 27, 1947, to Howard and Nina Sears. He grew up in Wheaton, Maryland. Greg was the older brother of two sisters. Growing up, he was active in church and Boy Scouts and enjoyed hiking and camping. He went on many family vacations to visit relatives in rural Missouri and to Bethany Beach, Delaware, and Cacapon State Park in West Virginia. An excellent student, his keen intellect and interest in reading served him well in life. Environmental issues were important to him and as a college student he appeared in a Washington Post photo in the long hair and beard of his generation as a champion of the cause. Greg was a talented pianist, later learning the trumpet as well as the euphonium which he played in the University of Maryland marching band. He played keyboard in a rock band composed of high school friends which enjoyed popularity for years.

Greg received a B.A. with high honors from the University of Maryland and received a J.D. with honors from the George Washington University National Law Center in Washington, D.C. In 1972, while working as a summer intern at the Catholic University Columbus School of Law, Greg met Barbara Simses of Easton, Connecticut, a fellow intern and student at the law school. They were married in May of 1973 and soon moved to Montgomery County. Not long after getting married, Greg gave up his motorcycle and shaved off his beard. The couple acquired a second home on the Chesapeake Bay near Cambridge, Maryland, in the late 1980’s. After graduating law school and passing the Maryland Bar, Greg joined the Office of the General Counsel of the Department of the Navy where he served in a variety of positions, including Deputy Assistant General Counsel of both NAVFAC and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command; Deputy Assistant General Counsel (Research, Development and Acquisitions); and, Associate Counsel, Naval Sea Systems Command. During his career with the Office of General Counsel, Greg was awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Navy Superior Service Award in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding and distinguished service to the Navy. Greg retired in 2015 after 42 years of dedicated public service. Greg was known for his unfailing kindness and generosity to all who met him. He treated others with consideration, patience, and compassion, making many friends during his lifetime. One hundred percent dependable, he could be counted on to do the right thing. His sense of humor helped him get through life with equilibrium, especially during the last several years. Greg was extensively well read in American history, politics, and biography. He took great pleasure in music of a variety of genres and styles, including Classical, Blues, early Jazz, Rock, Soul, and Country (with a little Disco thrown in). Greg enjoyed spending time at his second home on the Chesapeake Bay where he loved outdoor activities, including sailing, kayaking, and biking. He also enjoyed cooking. He collected online and printed recipes, as well as many from friends and family. However, he often failed to follow the recipes, instead adding his own creative touches that did not always work out for the best. Regardless of the result, he had fun with the process. Greg is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara, his siblings, Treva Miller (Clay) and Nancy Crouse (Richard), his sister-in-law, Judy Holst (Peter), and his brothers-in law John Simses (Connie) and Robert Simses (Mary), as well as several nieces and nephews and their families. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Greg’s memory to the Suburban Hospital Foundation.
