Captain’s Log Stardate: 25.03.21
Though not a Trekkie, I sat down to write a report from Monday’s vestry meeting, and the “Captain’s Log” openings for Star Trek “beamed” into my thinking. The Captain’s Log provided the audience with the crew’s mission, current context, and potential challenges—key information for the events which followed.
“Captain” Biddy opened this week’s vestry meeting, as always, with a service of prayer to keep us and our work grounded in faith. He then acknowledged that four of our members would rotate off the vestry after this meeting (Erick Montgomery, Bryan Hawkins, Ian McQueen, and Rex Teeslink), and he expressed gratitude for their service. This context informs a key challenge the vestry faces every year, that of providing uninterrupted support for our ministry committees. As a group, we discussed our vestry liaison roles to the committees and began the process of matching each person with a ministry. Charlie Tudor gave a Deep Dive presentation for Parish Life and Hospitality. Charlie will soon become our Junior Warden—more context—and the vestry will fill his liaison role.
The most important item in the Captain’s Log, however, may have been the reminder that our time on vestry should very much be a strengthening of our faith. (This felt like mission, context, and challenge all wrapped up together.) The mission of the Church finds its meaning in our faith, and as lay leaders, we must meet the challenges of life and work in the church, leaning on that same faith.
The Captain’s reminder serves as encouragement to all of us in the body of Christ, whatever forms our ministries take…prayer, study, worship, gratitude, generosity, and others. The Captain’s reminder also offers an apt message as we continue to travel at warp speed through the deep spaces of Lent.

Senior Warden

1Book1Diocese Lenten Reflection
& Optional Online Book Study
Beginning March 3, 6:00 PM
Each year, the Diocese of Georgia chooses a book for Lenten reading. This year’s 1Book1Diocese selection is Rowan Williams’ new book Passions of the Soul. From the cover “In Passions of the Soul, Rowan Williams opens up the great classics of Eastern Christian writing to show how it can help us to understand and cope with the ups and downs of modern life.” Books are available in the Narthex on Sunday and the parish office during the week. Donation $15. We will not offer a class at Saint Paul’s, however, the diocese has provided a study guide to use as your Lenten reflection.
In addition, beginning on Monday, March 3, Canon Varner will host a weekly online reflection group focusing on our 1Book1Diocese offering for Lent. This group will take some time to check in with one another at each gathering and then use the study guide linked below to guide our discussions on each section of the book. This study is open to all; no special expertise is required!
