LENT 2025: We Believe

What does it mean to live believing in God?

The season of Lent is a time when Christians slow their lives to think about the faith and its consequences for their lives. The first Christians used the days leading up to Holy Week as a time to learn the faith. The ancient ecumenical Council of Nicea included the first references to Lent as it prepared the creed that has unified Christians around the world for 1700 years.

We might be tempted to cast aside an ancient text from ancient times as irrelevant to our rapidly changing world. But we would miss the depth of resources a conversation with this text can offer our lives today.

Presbyterians do not blindly “sign up” for a list of doctrines. Rather we engage the wisdom of former generations with new questions and challenges from our lives. Take up the journey of Lent and join the conversation about God and our lives together.

Daily Devotions: Daily Lenten devotions written by members of our First Pres family are being emailed to everyone on our Devotions Email List. If you’d like to be added to the list (or if you'd like to be removed), please email mhuber@boxp.net.

Walk an Indoor Labyrinth: Mondays from 1:00 to 7:00 PM a canvas labyrinth will be laid out on the raised platform area of the Social Hall. All are invited to spend some contemplative time walking the labyrinth. The door on Maple St. closest to Social Hall will be unlocked for easy access during that time.

"Hard & Holy Work" discussion on Mondays

Join Rev. Nicole Chapman-Farley on Mondays during Lent for a discussion of Hard and Holy Work: A Lenten Journey through the Book of Exodus. We'll gather from March 10 to April 14.

In-person sessions are from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, and Zoom sessions are from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.

Email mhuber@boxp.net to sign up.

"Lent of Liberation" discussion on Wednesdays

Join Pastoral Resident Alex Barnes for a Lent lunchtime/early evening offering on Wednesdays from March 5 to April 16. We will meet on Zoom from 12:00 to 12:30 PM or 6:00 to 6:30 PM to explore questions from the devotional Lent of Liberation: Confronting the Legacy of American Slavery.

Each session includes a testimony from someone who escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad, a Scripture passage, and a reflection connecting biblical and historical themes. This devotional reflects on Lenten themes of exodus, redemption, discipline, and repentance. Email Megan at mhuber@boxp.net to sign up.
