Pi and Pie for All!

From Drew Sample, Enrollment Associate

It's not often you get to celebrate math with a feast. So, the WWS math faculty made sure to do Pi Day (3/14) right! Students ate pies; parents ate pies; and amid all the buttery, flaky pastry and sweet and savory fillings we all learned quite a lot!

Middle school is when pi comes into play in the WWS math curriculum, so naturally the middle schoolers are the main recipients of pies (although a few high schoolers did their best MS impersonations to join the fun). Grades 6, 7 & 8 spent the week exploring pi through experiential learning. They gained a practical and personal understanding of how pi is derived and its significance. To top it off, they celebrated with a feast of arguably too many pies and a few overfilled bellies.

But parents can't let the students have all the fun, so the night before March 14 we had our own pi(e) party! WWS math faculty Sarah Heirman and Nick DeVinney led us through experiential exercises from Grades 7 and 10 to give us a view into how math is taught differently at WWS. They also gave an overview of the WWS math curriculum - from setting the foundations for observation and computation in kindergarten all the way through calculus in Grade 12. Naturally, the parents had plenty of pie as well.

If you didn't make it to Pi(e) Night and would like a brief overview of the WWS math curriculum, check out this snapshot of the curriculum, with a focus on how pi is revisited in increasingly sophisticated ways throughout the grades.

We're Hiring!

New Educational Support Position

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a top-tier Waldorf education, WWS is excited to announce the addition of a new faculty position to oversee educational support for our middle and high school students. This position will focus on supporting students with diverse learning needs through individualized and small-group instruction and through collaboration with faculty and families.

A cornerstone of Waldorf education is meeting the children who are in front of us with teaching that provides what they need to thrive in the context in which they live. We are confident that this new role will not only enhance our current students' educational experiences but also contribute to our ability to grow enrollment and retain students for years to come.

We are currently interviewing for the position and look forward to announcing a new faculty member soon. If you know of anyone who may be a good fit, they can review the job description on our website and learn how to apply

Senior Projects

Class of 2025 Senior Project Presentations

Wednesday, March 26 from 4:30-8pm

Every year, seniors may elect to do an independent project delving into a topic that particularly interests and inspires them. The process begins with a proposal at the end of 11th grade. Following approval, they work independently for about a year, supported by a mentor. Students also have a class in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 12th grade to further develop and discuss their projects. This process culminates in a public presentation for the community.

This year, 7 Seniors will present their projects on Wednesday, March 26 from 4:30-8pm, with a short dinner break. Presentations will be followed by Q&A.

The following students will present (order TBD):

  • Eli Adelmann - What Makes a Car a Driver's Car?
  • Sebastian Chang-Leung - Year of the Cat: A Solo Game Dev Experiment
  • Isa de Michele - An iPad, an Apple Pencil, and a Dream: The Making of an Animation
  • Jasper Gorokhov - Humanity and Violence in the Storm and Stress Era
  • Nayila Elisha Gross - Education Inequality in US Public Schools
  • Bonnie Metzger-Fleetwood - The AI Alignment Problem
  • Maria Muñoz - Linguistics and its Application in Criminal Investigations

We are looking forward to a joyous evening with nervousness and anticipation... Please join us for the presentations!

Due to the topics being presented, we recommend this event for audience members in Grade 6 and above. Students, parents, and friends are invited to join us in the auditorium.

Trustees Council Meeting

Thursday, March 27 at 6pm (open session)

This month, the Trustees Council (TC) will have a joint session with the College at 4:30pm. The open portion of the TC meeting is scheduled to begin at 6pm.

WWS TC meetings are held monthly. The first 45 minutes (approximately) are open to the community, and all are welcome to attend.

Wednesday, April 30 from 7-8:30pm

Zoom Webinar

PCW is pleased to welcome Dr. Devorah Heitner, author of Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World.

From Roblox to Instagram to TikTok, the boundaries of privacy for our children are stretched increasingly thin. Dr. Heitner will share insights into how we can help our kids be thoughtful about their boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation as they grow up “in public” on social media apps.

The event’s discussion format will feature ample opportunity for Q&A. We welcome questions in advance for our speaker which may be submitted to administration@parentscouncil.org.

All PCW member school parents and caregivers, administrators, faculty and staff are invited.
