MoDOT helps with recovery efforts after tornado outbreaks

More than a dozen fatalities reported, thousands of buildings destroyed

On the night of Friday, March 14, multiple tornadoes caused damage in central, eastern and southeastern Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports at least 12 people were killed across Missouri during the tornado outbreaks, which occurred in 27 counties.

During the storm, nearly 20 separate tornadoes were surveyed in areas stretching from Rolla to the St. Louis Metro region as well as through multiple counties in the southeast.

Our hearts go out to all those affected.

MoDOT crews worked along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and utility companies to clear debris and reopen roadways. Countless signs were knocked down and signals were out.

At the height of the storm, more than 140,000 homes and businesses were without power, and 101 roads were closed due to debris, flooding and structural damage.

Many of MoDOT’s own employees were personally impacted by the storm but still responded to assist communities across the state in the storm response and recovery. Those employees and any other Missourians with unmet needs are encouraged to contact United Way by dialing 2-1-1 or the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.

Input needed on Missouri's transportation priorities

MoDOT launched a survey to gather information as it updates both the Long-Range Transportation Plan and the State Freight and Rail Plan. Both plans are federally required and serve as roadmaps for the state’s transportation network – addressing the evolving needs of the system and setting priorities. The survey will be open through April 30. Learn more.

Heads Up! when driving, walking or riding

As the spring season begins and more pedestrians explore the state, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is asking drivers, walkers and riders to keep their heads up and be aware of their surroundings on or near Missouri roads. The Heads Up! Pedestrian Safety Campaign runs through April 19 and reminds Missourians that awareness is key to survival. Learn more.
