New to the One Health Conversation?
Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Following some of the progress of One Health in France via France for One Health
France plays a leading role in the international "One Health" approach. Measures such as the publication of the National Health and Environment Plan (PNSE 4) in 2021, which affirms the One Health approach, the creation of the Committee for Monitoring and Anticipating Health Risks (COVARS) in 2022, and the leadership of the Health and Environment Group (GSE) illustrate this realization.

One Health Updates from South Sudan
Having formally established One Health in May 2022 after incorporating it into its National Action Plan for Health Security, 2020-2024, South Sudan still faces recurring issues including neglected zoonotic diseases passing from animals to humans. With insufficient funding for routine activities, many outbreaks are currently happening in the country; mPox, Cholera across the Country, Anthrax in two States, Hepatitis / Yellow Fever, Measles, snake bite, rabies and more in nearby regions like Ebola Virus Disease in neighboring Uganda. Many people are struggling to survive day to day. The One Health Secretariat is doing a lot to engage stakeholders and partners ensuring that the One Health Multisectoral Mechanism (MCM) is rolled out to subnational level to protect local populations from Zoonotic diseases with much focus on Animal sectors both domestic and wild. In February a multi-disciplinary team of One health experts investigated Anthrax in the two states of Bar El Ghazal, Warrap and Western Bar El Ghazal. They found thousands of animals dying and owners seeking help to rescue them. As the animals are their only lifeline for living, the economic situation in the country is deteriorating every day.
One Health has now been established in South Sudan for almost three years. Achieved so far:
- One Health secretariat established at the national level and meets bi-weekly
- One Health strategic plan developed pending launching and dissemination.
- One Health multi-sectoral coordination mechanism (OH MCM) established and launched at the national level and launched at subnational level in 6 out of 10 states and 3 administrative areas.
- One Health joint deployment for zoonotic diseases, dog and snake bites, bee stings and others.
- Now annually celebrating World Rabies day and World One Health Day.
Though South Sudan still faces many challenges, with no dedicated office space and ongoing insufficient funds, weekly meetings are still conducted and the Department of Health Security, Surge Capacity Development and One Health is determined to move forward with its programs of rolling out One Health Social Science activities and training to all stakeholders. Though FAO provides some amount of Anthrax Vaccines, there are many logistical challenges getting them to the most affected areas, providing the 5-day vaccinator orientation, covering launching costs, and paying vaccinators, supervisors. Conversely, the current US government administrative measures have severely impacted South Sudan One Health activities. Update on 14 Mar, 2025 by Mabior John Aguto, Assistant Director and One Health Operation Manager, and Angelo Goup Thon Kouch, Director or Health Security, SURGE Capacity Development and One Health, Ministry of Health, Juba, Republic of South Sudan.

New Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza
Released February 21, 2025 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and The World Organisation for Animal Health
In response to the global ecological and epidemiological changes and repeated intercontinental spread of the H5Nx goose/Guangdong (Gs/GD) lineage high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), under the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs), have drafted a ten-year global strategy for the prevention and control of high pathogenicity avian influenza (2024–2033). In a call for global commitment the FAO and WOAH urge governments, industry players, and relevant stakeholders to actively participate in the implementation of this strategy. A March 3, 2025 launch webinar served as a crucial step toward achieving a more resilient and sustainable poultry sector while mitigating the risks of HPAI on a global scale. https://tinyurl.com/bdwuzhux Recording Available.

ECDC and EFSA release Avian Influenza Public Health Guidance: Coordinated One Health investigation and management of outbreaks in humans and animals caused by zoonotic avian influenza viruses
January 29, 2025 This report should assist in developing guidance documents to facilitate coordinated One Health investigations and the management of outbreaks in humans and animals caused by zoonotic avian influenza viruses. When investigating and controlling outbreaks caused by zoonotic avian influenza viruses (AIV), a One Health approach is key. However, knowledge-sharing on AIV-specific One Health strategies, tools and action plans remains limited across the EU/EEA. Herding cats - It’s past time to include pets in disease surveillance: H5N1 is just one reason why
March 4, 2025
Authors: Meghan Davis, Ellen Carlin, Erin Sorrell, David Stiefel
“Given the pandemic risk from H5N1, active surveillance of companion animals is needed to recognize the full scope of the problem and identify critical control points for intervention. It is most needed in instances where exposure could be highest, including pets of dairy and poultry workers and those fed raw milk or meat……Such surveillance is necessary given our rapidly evolving understanding of the multiple transmission routes for cats. …. We need a clearer understanding of whether indirect routes of exposure like this can lead to infection in cats….One way to achieve this is for federal and state health authorities to include zoonosis risk questions in their contact tracing efforts. ….To capture these data, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority should accelerate development of rapid point-of-care or at-home tests for H5. These should be put to use in people in high-risk occupations and their close contacts. With USDA support, these or similar tests could also be developed for and validated in cats. Such rapid tests could be used in veterinary clinics to screen cats with respiratory or neurologic signs, getting answers to clinicians quickly. Confirmatory testing in state and federal laboratories will remain essential. https://tinyurl.com/5ctt2644
Note: This need for biosurveillance of both companion and wild animals is what Tracey McNamara has been calling for since 1999. See her 2018 TEDx talk about how we are using humans as the sentinel ‘canaries in the coal mine’ when we don’t pay attention to the animals that we humans share our environments with.

Example: Investigating Salmonella and Wild Song Birds
This was the first time Salmonella in wild birds was linked to an outbreak of human illnesses. This investigation led to better understanding of the occurrence and relationship of Salmonella infections in people, pets, and wildlife. Investigation partners noted that collaborating with CDC and other health agencies was beneficial because of the different perspectives brought to this issue at the intersection of human and animal health. For example, those working in wildlife were considering human health aspects of this outbreak, in addition to the die-offs in songbirds.

What Does “Breaking Down Silos” Truly Mean?
At its core, breaking down silos requires fostering:
-
Cross-sector collaboration – Encouraging partnerships between industries such as animal agriculture, public health, and environmental sustainability.
- Interdisciplinary dialogue – Bringing together experts from science, policy, and business to approach challenges from multiple perspectives.
- Transparency and knowledge sharing – Ensuring that information flows freely to enhance decision-making and industry progress.
- Systems thinking – Viewing challenges holistically rather than addressing isolated parts of a problem.

Examining the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Using a One Health Approach: Profiling Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Viet Nam
March 3, 2025
Author: Laura Kahn In: PEAH (Policies for Equitable Access to Health)
“This One Health analysis on Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Viet Nam has shown that there are gaps in the SDGs, primarily in the domesticated animal and crop realm, that impact human health and well-being. Antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic diseases, food safety, food security (from the production standpoint), soil health, pesticide use, and animal waste management are important areas that are being overlooked. Livestock and their wastes produce methane and nitrous oxide, potent greenhouse gasses. Unexploded ordnances contaminating environments and killing innocent people are also not tracked. SDGs that specifically follow these areas would provide important information to improve global health, well-being, and sustainability” https://www.peah.it/2025/03/14442/

Microplastics contribute to evolution of antimicrobial resistance, study finds
March 11, 2025
Author: Chris Dall In: CIDRAP
A new study adds a new layer to concerns about the role that the extremely small (less than 5 millimeters in length) pieces of plastic, which are ubiquitous in the environment, play in promoting the emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacteria. While previous studies have shown how microplastics can serve as vehicles on which bacterial communities can form and share resistance genes, this study suggests there's an interaction occurring between the microplastics and bacteria that influences the development of AMR. https://tinyurl.com/2a5a9ykz
