MMI research accomplishments

GRANTS AND AWARDS

Nicole Rodriguez, PhD, professor, integrated Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (iCASD), received a grant from the Child Health Research Institute.

  • Project Title: Immersive virtual reality for teaching pedestrian safety skills for autistic children
  • Project Description: Autistic children face a higher risk of pedestrian accidents; teaching pedestrian safety skills in real-world environments can be dangerous, as many autistic children require repeated practice to learn new safety behaviors. This study proposes the development of a fully immersive VR training program designed to teach pedestrian safety skills to autistic children. Our study leverages realistic traffic scenarios and an omnidirectional treadmill to enhance engagement, promote naturalistic movement, and improve skill acquisition.
  • Collaborators: Co-investigator Toni Rose Agana, PhD, post-doctoral fellow, iCASD; and Ryan Thomas, research technician, MMI Department of Physical Therapy.

Nicole Zabik, PhD, research assistant professor in the MMI Research Department, received the Early Career Investigator Outstanding Paper Award from the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. This journal, for the Research Society on Alcoholism, selects one awardee each year based on the best paper from an early-career researcher.
