First Cataloguing Books 1940

Library Volunteers - First Cataloguing Books, 1940

Much like it is now, spring was a good time to complete big projects before the arrival of the summer crowds. Pictured above is a group of volunteers all pitching in to get the collection of the Southwest Harbor Public Library cataloged for the first time since the library was opened. The scale of this work and the number of volunteers needed to complete it was so great that Miss Dorothy Elder Marcus, who had just recently acquired the Everett Ellsworth and Fannie S. Truette Cottage—High Tide, opened the house to be used for completing this great task in the spring of 1940. A few years later, Miss Dorothy Elder Marcus would sell this cottage to librarian Ruth Lawrence.

A year before, in the spring of 1939, Nell Thornton would write in her column for the Bar Harbor Times that the foundation had just been poured for an addition on the western side of the library which everyone hoped would be completed by July 1st.
