The Office of Global Initiative & Experiential Learning is a community engaged learning initiative that prepares undergraduates to be leaders of nonprofit and public organizations. Through the integration of course readings, classroom discussions, lectures and community engaged learning projects, this dynamic field-study challenges participants to broaden their theoretical and practical understanding of community, nonprofit and public organizations committed to sustainable living, education, public health and community wellness.

RU-N Students Enhances Study Abroad and Research Partnerships in India and Nepal: In December 2024, a team of students, led by the Office of Global Initiatives and Experiential Learning, traveled to India and Nepal to expand their local-to-global S.T.E.A.M initiatives. As part of their efforts, they installed two solar suitcases at the Kevin Rohan Foundation, located in a rural area of Kathmandu.

RU-N Students Deepens Connections Through Transformative Field Study Expedition in Maine: In January 2024, a group of eleven Rutgers Newark students traveled to Marlow, Maine, for an immersive experiential learning program. Throughout their stay, they participated in activities centered around sustainable forestry, eco-immersion, and outdoor expeditions, gaining hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.

Ecuador: Join OGIEL immersive Study Abroad programs in Ecuador! Live sustainably with the Quechua community, learn traditional farming, and hike the Imbabura mountains. *Limited spots and travel grants available.

Belize Summer: Join OGIEL immersive Study Abroad program in Belize! Explore Mayan ruins, engage in service learning, and address sustainability, health, and gender issues, including solar suitcase installations.

Alex Dika Seggerman

Unlock the Wonders of Egypt! Explore, Learn, and Grow Through Unique Global Opportunities! This transformative program, led by Associate Professor of Art History Alex Dika Seggerman, offers an immersive experience into Egypt’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Students will have the chance to delve into the ancient wonders of the region, engage with local experts, and deepen their understanding of art, history, and archaeology.

Dr. Jason Bird

In the Belize Spring Alternative Program, led by Dr. Jason Bird, students will engage with key stakeholders from the University of Belize and Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change while exploring sustainable energy, organic farming, community resilience, and leadership. This immersive experience offers the opportunity to learn about local cultural practices and sustainable development initiatives, while contributing to impactful community projects.

Led by Dr. Bran Murphy, this program offers a unique opportunity to explore constitutional history at Oxford, including the Bodleian Library and other cultural sites. Hosted by the Quil Project at Pembroke College, participants will engage in social change and leadership, becoming Social Change Agents and joining the International Leadership Exchange Alumni network.

Step into nature with the "RU Hiking & Biking" Campaign: Join our outdoor challenge and connect with nature while focusing on mindfulness! Whether you're hiking scenic trails or biking through stunning landscapes, this campaign is designed to help you stay present and explore the outdoors. Three winners will receive REI gift cards as prizes, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place earning different reward amounts.

RU-N Students and OGIEL Staff Present S.T.E.A.M. Project at Symposium: On February 28, 2025, two RU-N students and OGIEL staff presented the Local to Global S.T.E.A.M. Project at the Dr. Paul Shane Policy Symposium. This We Care Solar initiative provides sustainable energy solutions by distributing solar-powered "S.T.E.A.M. Suitcases" to schools in underserved communities, promoting solar education and global service in regions like Tanzania, Nicaragua, and Belize.
