Dear Devra,

We appreciate that you have multiple news sources and are getting daily calls to action. We hope this message encourages you to feel good about being part of a resilient movement that stands in solidarity with so many interwined social, climate, and economic justice movements.

We focus here on two main issues at the national level: Medicaid and Medicare. The next message will bring you back to California and our state-based single payer movement.

Enjoy this inspiration from Iris DeMent who, like us, is “Workin’ on a World”.

Priority Medicaid Action

As we know, the White House and Congressional majority are intent on extending $4 trillion in tax cuts favoring the wealthiest individuals and corporations in the country. This threatens to result in up to $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid, an obvious attack on the health and lives of tens of millions of vulnerable Americans. Here's a smart strategy that needs more volunteers!

You will be making calls to spur constituent action in three key California districts.

If there is any hope of swaying voters away from electing members of Congress who misrepresent their interests--or in the immediate future encouraging them to pressure their legislators to break with a destructive party line--it may well lie in these districts.

The three identified Republican members of Congress are already under fire from constituents alarmed at the direction Washington is taking. In one case, close to 40% of residents in CA-22, Rep. David Valadao's district, depend on Medi-Cal (California's version of Medicaid). To find out more about the districts and sign up to call click here.

And here's a petition to sign.

End the Privatization of Medicare

The annual meeting of Physicians for a National Health Program took place a week after the fall election. It drew members of allied groups from around the country, all steadfastly dedicated to eventually achieving Expanded and Improved Medicare for All. The group presented its current "Triple Aim" goals, adapted for the times:

Stop Medicare Privatization ~ Thwart the push to 100% Medicare Advantage

Improve Original Medicare ~ Cap expenses, add benefits

Build the Movement ~ Engage the majority of doctors who now favor single payer

As many know, PNHP is a go-to source for single payer background, news, talking points, and actions--helpful for both national and state advocacy. Specifically on confronting Medicare Advantage, click their HealMedicare section.

To get involved in the Movement to End Privatization of Medicare, you can contact Dr. Ana Malinow, leader of this group of doctors and activists who are working on the issue.

Another longtime great group to connect with for Medicare and Medicaid news and action is Social Security Works. You can order their book, a primer on the subject, Social Security Works for Eveyone! on the website.

2025 Election of HCA Board and Officers

On February 23, we held our second Annual Membership Meeting where we elected our board members for the coming years. Michael Lighty, president of the Healthy California Now statewide coalition (HCN), was our guest speaker. The board then met to elect officers for 2025. We welcome our new Vice Chair, Jonee Grassi.

The remainder of the board's executive committee will continue in their roles:

Devra Dallman, Chair; Harry Baker, Secretary; Scott Thomason, Treasurer; Ellen Karel, Membership Secretary. We would like to thank Bart Woolery for serving two years as our Vice Chair. We are fortunate he will continue on our board of directors.

In solidarity and with gratitude,

Devra Dallman, Chair
