Recovery Alliance Initiative Symposium Highlights

DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie and colleagues recently attended the Recovery Alliance Initiative Symposium. The conference was a great success bringing together nearly 200 participants including recovery professionals, advocates, and community members for two days of networking, discussions, and workshops. With the conference's focus on strengthening recovery efforts across North Carolina, Director Crosbie highlighted initiatives to amplify recovery and community-based services in addition to preventing substance misuse and overdose statewide.

NCDHHS Hosts Spanish-Language Cafecito and Tele-Town Hall

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services hosted a live Spanish-language Cafecito and tele-town hall on March 13 to discuss how people can support their mental well-being, find resources for youth and adults in North Carolina and get help for themselves or someone else experiencing a mental health crisis. The event reached a total of 10,851 North Carolinians. Panelists answered questions from participants on how to find resources for a loved one who is struggling with substance use, services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, what to know about 988, how to get support while waiting for in-person services and more.

Order Free 988 Print Materials for Your Barbershop or Hair Salon

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is providing free, printed 988 educational materials for barbershops and hair salons. Sign up today for these new window clings and wallet cards. The deadline to order materials to share with your community has been extended to April 7, 2025.

File Your State and Federal Taxes for Free with IRS Direct File

Direct File is a new program that allows you to easily file your federal and North Carolina state tax returns online through the IRS Direct File program. Direct File is open and available to more than one third of taxpayers in North Carolina filing their 2024 income tax returns.

NAMI Virtual Town Hall: Peer Support in Prison

Transforming Access to Care for People Who Are Incarcerated

There is a great need for mental health and substance use disorder treatment for people who are incarcerated. Approximately 37% of people in state and federal prisons have a diagnosed mental health condition, and 65% of people incarcerated in prisons have a substance use disorder. Register for NAMI’s next Virtual Town Hall and join presenters as they share how they are using peer support specialists and peer programming in jails and prisons.

SMART Recovery 2025 National Conference

Building Communities of Empowerment

Learn about self-empowered and stigma free recovery at the upcoming 2025 SMART conference. This gathering of SMART Recovery and Family and Friends facilitators, professionals, peers, and advocates is dedicated to self-empowered, stigma-free recovery. This event offers keynotes, educational breakout sessions, and open discussions to help enhance professional and personal skills, connect with a like-minded community, and explore real-world strategies for supporting recovery.

NC Recovery Courts Conference 2025

Creating Lasting Change

This year’s conference welcomes statewide recovery court teams and partners and is geared to recovery courts working with individuals involved in the Adult Recovery Courts, Veterans Treatment Courts, DWI/DUI Courts, and Mental Health Courts. A separate conference is being planned for later this year geared specifically to family and youth treatment courts. The final deadline for registration is March 26.

Mental Health First Aid Training Opportunities

Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants to identify, understand, and respond to mental health and substance misuse challenges. This basic course on mental health and substance use conditions will teach the skills to notice and engage individuals experiencing these symptoms. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of this course. The course is foundational and part of the training curriculum for NCServes Providers & Staff, Peer Supports, and Community Stakeholders.
