Second Term Swearing In Ceremonies
I’m honored to invite you to join me as I’m sworn in for my second term as your District 4 Councilmember at two special events this January. The first will be a Public Swearing-In Ceremony during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 14th, at 1:30 PM at San José City Hall, where BUSD Board Trustee Thelma Boac will administer the oath of office. For those who can’t make it downtown, I’ll also host a Community Swearing-In Ceremony on Friday, January 17th, as part of our D4 Stars Event at the Berryessa Community Center.
I hope you’ll join us to celebrate this milestone together with neighbors and friends!

Berryessa School Closures
Faced with a number of very unattractive options, and dealing with a significant decline in student enrollment, the Berryessa School Board voted this week to close three of our wonderful elementary schools - Cherrywood, Laneview, and Toyon. I am sad that cost of living and an aging population in Berryessa has made it impossible for the school district to sustain all 13 neighborhood facilities, but I am committed to working with the BUSD to ensure implementation of their school consolidation goes as smoothly as possible. I have also made it clear how important our school district's special programs are to our community, including our Mandarin Immersion program, and our Parent Participation Program. I have been assured that the district will continue to fully support those programs as they reconfigure school boundaries in order to implement their consolidation plan. | Councilmember David Cohen
D4 Stars Gala • Celebrate Our Community | Join us from 6:00-8:00 pm, January 17th, 2025 at the Berryessa Community Center as we recognize and celebrate outstanding individuals and organizations doing amazing work in District 4. | Check out the video from last year's District 4 Stars event | Pajama Giveaway Was A Jolly Good Time! | My team and I had a great time at our 4th annual District 4 Pajama Giveaway! Parents brought their Berryessa Union School District students to meet Santa and get gifts, pajamas, and hot cocoa. Hope your holidays are warm and joyous! | Last Friday, I had the opportunity to visit and tour the VTA Cerone Yard, getting a behind-the-scenes look at one of the country’s leading public transit organizations. It was impressive to see firsthand the hard work and innovation that keep our buses and transit systems running smoothly for the people of Santa Clara County. VTA plays a critical role in connecting our communities, and I’m grateful for the chance to learn more about the dedicated team making it all possible. | Humane Society In Need of Donations | Following this week's devastating fire, Humane Society Silicon Valley is in urgent need of clean, gently used or new towels and blankets. Donations can be dropped off starting at 10AM today at 901 Ames Avenue—please look for the signs on the doors marked “Get Acquainted Rooms.” Donations will be accepted daily from 10AM to 5PM until further notice. | Saying Goodbye to Colleagues | This week marked the final City Council meeting for Councilmembers Sergio Jimenez and Dev Davis as they conclude their distinguished tenures in office. Both have served with dedication, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the residents of San Jose. Throughout their terms, Sergio and Dev have demonstrated what it means to be model public servants, engaging thoughtfully, leading with principle, and always striving to make our city a better place. Their presence at City Hall will be deeply missed, but their contributions and the example they set will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy for those who follow in their footsteps.

Community Health Care • Enroll Now |
Open enrollment is officially underway for Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Care Program serving Californians without access to any other health coverage.
Even with the expansion of Medi-Cal in 2024, too many Californians remain uninsured. The Community Health Care Program (CHCP) helps to address this gap by providing Kaiser Permanente’s high-quality care and coverage to eligible Californians in our service areas.
CHCP members are enrolled in the Kaiser Permanente Platinum 90 HMO plan. Monthly premiums for comprehensive coverage are subsidized, and CHCP members do not have to pay copays for out-of-pocket costs for most care at Kaiser Permanente facilities.
Individuals do not need to be U.S. citizens to qualify.
The deadline to apply for CHCP is January 31, 2025, and space is limited.
Find CHCP outreach resources:
Please visit our CHCP resource page to find information about CHCP to share in your community or with your colleagues and networks:
- CHCP flyers available in 9 languages
- CHCP overview presentation deck
- Zip code list for KP service areas
Information about eligibility, how to apply, and a list of organizations helping individuals to apply can also be found online or by calling 1-800-464-4000 (TTY 711).
