Metro and Minnesota Demographic and Economic Trends
Last week’s Municipal Legislative Commission meeting featured Susan Brower, Minnesota’s State Demographer. Some topline reported data:
• Population growth is slowing in Minnesota due to an aging population and fewer births.
• Current birth rate is about 58-60,000 per year, down from 68-69,000 in 2006.
• Seven-county metro area growth rates have been generally declining over time.
• Hennepin and Ramsey counties experienced population loss during the pandemic years (part of the reason why Dakota County is expected to pass Ramsey county in the decade of 2030).
Immigration Trends
• Increased net international immigration observed in the past 3 years (much of the recent growth is attributable to the increase in international immigration).
• Future growth rates will be heavily influenced by federal immigration policies.
• Minnesota has higher international immigration compared to neighboring states, likely due to strong economic opportunities in the Twin Cities. Source: Shared by the City of Rosemount

Metropolitan Economy Overview
The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area has one of the fastest-rising inflation rates in the country, ranking sixth for the largest two-month price increase among major U.S. cities, according to a WalletHub study. The report, which analyzed Consumer Price Index data from 23 metro areas, found inflation in the Twin Cities rose 1.5 percent over the past two months and 3 percent over the past year, placing it 10th overall for inflation impact.
