Live from the Berlinale: Films in

Consideration for FilmColumbia25

by Larry Kardish, FilmColumbia Co-Executive and Co-Artistic Director

The Berlin International Film Festival, known as the Berlinale, ended on Sunday, February 23, the day Germans went to the polls. I suppose this was appropriate, as the first Berlin Film Festival, which took place in 1951 on the initiative of an American serviceman in Berlin, a city then in ruins and divided into four districts each administered by an Allied occupying force, was established to “showcase” the culture of the “free world.” In short, the Festival began as a political gesture aimed at the civilian population of Berlin, and for the next seventy-four years, through the creation of West Germany and East Germany, and the building and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, it has remained, more than less, an artistic event inflected by politics. In this follow up to Madagascar, New York Central Park Zoo animals Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippo start off where we last left them, on Madagascar. When they finally leave the island in attempt to return to New York, they land instead in the wilderness of Africa. Here, an overjoyed Alex reconnects with his parents and the rest of his family. But communicating with them, after spending so much time at the zoo with his fellow animal transplants and visiting New Yorkers, is another story.

"This is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original." Derek Adams, Time Out

PLEASE NOTE: Morris Memorial has limited seating. Families are encouraged to bring your own blankets and pillows to spread out on the floor. Concessions will be available for sale! The building is not wheelchair accessible.

The Crandell Theatre is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit community cinema in Chatham, NY. It is one of a few community-based, nonprofit theaters in the United States devoted to film and one of fewer than one hundred single-screen movie theaters nationally. The theater is supported by ticket sales and earned revenue, contributions of members and friends, and private and public grants, including the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Since 2010, Crandell Theatre, Inc., has raised more than $1 million to purchase the historic theater and make needed repairs. The current Crandell board is engaged in a multi-million-dollar campaign to renovate and restore the area’s oldest, largest, single-screen theater and enhance the moviegoing experience for generations to come.
