NLTA EXECUTIVE NOTES

March 5-7, 2025

Your Provincial Executive met in St. John’s on March 5 and 6 followed by a Joint Council Meeting on March 7. Executive Notes is a summary of discussions and decisions that occurred at these meetings.

President’s Report

Since the last meeting of Provincial Executive, the President has participated in several events and attended meetings in his capacity as President, including attending a Teacher Allocation Review Committee Meeting, Teacher Recruitment and Retention Committee Meeting and an Education Accord Advisory Group Meeting. President Langdon also participated in several media interviews about the proposed Intermediate Curriculum changes. The full President’s report is available here.

Provincial Executive Meeting Minutes

Business from Standing Committees

Table Officers

· The NLTA will donate $2,500 to support the 2025 Provincial Student Leadership Conference taking place in Grand Falls-Windsor in October 2025.

· The following policy changes have been approved: I. Operations of the NLTA, L. Biennial General Meeting, #2-5 were amended. The amended policy can be viewed here

Membership Benefits and Services Committee

· Five Pre-Retirement Seminars will be held during the Fall of 2025 in the following locations: Deer Lake, Gander, and three in St. John’s. The dates and sites will be announced later.

· The NLTA will award Terence Ball, Heather Wells, and Earle Pike the 2024-25 Bancroft Award, established to recognize outstanding service at the branch level.

· Robyn Foley will be awarded the 2024-25 Special Recognition Award, which recognizes teachers who have made a major contribution to the cultural, social and/or the community life of Newfoundland and Labrador.

· The 2024-25 Allan Bishop Award recipient will be Dean Ingram. This award was established to recognize outstanding service to the NLTA at the provincial level.

Professional Issues Committee

The 2025 Barnes Award will be presented to Yvonne Dawe. The Barnes Award has been established to recognize outstanding professional development services provided at the Special Interest Council level.

By-Laws and Resolutions to Convention 2025

The Provincial Executive considered each resolution to BGM and determined their recommendations for delegates. They also considered proposed amendments to NLTA By-Laws that will be brought forward at Convention. More information on BGM is available here.

Other Business

· The NLTA will issue a public statement condemning the harassment and disruptive behaviors directed at teachers by individuals on both social media and in person. More information is available here.

· The NLTA will lobby NLSchools and CSFP to implement a debriefing policy for school staff following traumatic incidents.

Association Priorities

Updates on the NLTA Priorities for 2023-25 were provided to the Provincial Executive and Branch Presidents for review, questions and comment. The priorities are: Workload Concerns; Membership Well-being and Protection; Collective Bargaining and Services for Members; Retention, Recruitment and Resources; and, Advocacy on and Response to Government Initiatives. Group Insurance

Joint Council discussed recent decisions of Group Insurance Managers regarding changes to the structure of the Health Plan. More details are available here.

Advisory Motions

The following advisory motions were carried by Joint Council and will be considered by Provincial Executive:

· That the NLTA lobby government to review safety procedures with all involved parties on a biennial basis so everyone, including the RCMP/RNC and legal team, are aware and update as necessary.

· That the NLTA lobby government to follow the province of Quebec and lobby for the outlawing of all vaping liquid flavours.

· That the NLTA lobby government to make improvements to the HR department at NLSchools so that disciplinary issues are dealt with in a timely manner.

· That the NLTA contact payroll regarding reimbursement within a two-week period of receiving an expense claim.

· That the NLTA Model Branch By-Laws be amended to include the option to have a TLA Representative as a member of the Branch Executive.

Policy Changes Since November 2024

Joint Council approved several changes in NLTA policy. These policies provide direction for continuity of decisions and guidelines to those who take positions on behalf of the Association. The amended policies include Professional Development Programs, the Election of President and Vice-President by Province-wide Vote, and Biennial General Meeting (Convention).

BGM 2025

Joint Council was given information on the preparation of delegates for BGM 2025: Fighting for Change. The Convention will take place in St. John’s from April 22-25, 2025. Information related to the Convention can be found here.
