Gear Up for MVCAC Legislative Day & Spring Committee Meetings!

March 24-26, Embassy Suites Sacramento

MVCAC’s annual Legislative Day and Spring committee meetings will be March 24-26 at the Embassy Suites in Sacramento. Please be sure to register here.

Leg Day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 25. Please visit the Leg Day website to find a legislative contact list, outreach email, and other important information for scheduling legislative visits. Like last year, agencies will schedule their meetings directly with legislators or staff. This is beneficial as legislators appreciate hearing directly from their constituents and it helps MVCDs build relationships with their representatives.

If you are having trouble scheduling meetings and would like assistance, please contact MVCAC's Executive Director Megan MacNee at mmacnee@amgroup.us. In addition to Leg Day, there will be working group and committee meetings – please click here to see the schedule of events.

Legendary Medical Entomologist Bruce Eldridge Dies at 91

His Exemplary Military, Academic and Administrative Career Spanned Six Decades

MVCAC was saddened to learn of the passing of Bruce Eldridge. Bruce was a strong proponent of MVCAC, and he will be missed by many in our field. Below is an excerpt of a piece about Bruce from the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology.

by Kathy Keatley Garvey February 13, 2025

UC Davis professor emeritus Bruce Frederick Eldridge, an internationally recognized medical entomologist whose exemplary military,  academic and administrative career spanned more than six decades, died Wednesday, Feb. 5 in Davis at age 91.

Dr. Eldridge began his entomology career in the U.S. Army, chairing the Department of Entomology, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, D.C., from 1969 to 1977. He completed his 21-year military career in 1978, retiring as a colonel, and then served as professor and chair of the Oregon State University Department of Entomology from 1978 to 1986. He joined the UC Davis entomology faculty in 1986, and directed the statewide UC Mosquito Research Program (UCMRP) for 14 years.

A highlight of his career: receiving the international Harry Hoogstraal Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Entomology in 2007 from the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. At the time, Eldridge was one of only 15 entomologists to receive the award since 1987, and the third at UC Davis.

Information session on Proposed Listing of Monarch Butterflies as Endangered

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has a proposed rule listing monarch butterflies as an endangered species. AMCA and MVCAC will be providing comment letters on the proposed 4(d) rule regarding the use of pesticides in areas where monarch butterflies are. Letters are due March 12.

The MVCAC Regulatory Affairs Committee will facilitate a conversation with MVCAC members on Tuesday, February 25 at 2 pmClick here to be directed to the zoom link. At the meeting, the committee will share the proposed listing, its specific request for information on critical habitat in California, and talking points that members can consider for use in their comment letters. The committee will also ask for feedback on what should be included in the MVCAC comment letter. Members will be asked to provide input to the committee and to MVCAC on what additional resources they need.

Glossary of Terms

MVCAC has created a glossary of terms to provide clear and concise definitions of common terms that mosquito and vector control agencies use in public education and outreach efforts. The definitions are intentionally short and use plain language so they are easy to understand and can be translated into other languages. While MVCDs are not required to use the words and definitions below the goal is to have consistency in language across MVCAC and its member agencies.

Send in Tick Program Updates

Dear MVCAC Members,

As part of our ongoing efforts to support tick surveillance and Lyme disease prevention, please remember to provide any updates to your district’s tick programs to Kelly Fuery, who is serving as our representative on the Lyme Disease Advisory Council. You can reach her at kellyl@msmosquito.org

Additionally, please contact DART to grant permission to share tick data with third parties. This collaboration will help strengthen our public health initiatives and contribute to a broader understanding of tick-borne disease risks across California.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued support in advancing our vector control efforts.

Best regards,

Conlin
