Creating Healthier Environments for the Next Generation
Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in India, affecting millions each year. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, GKII is collaborating with PubMatic to support the TB-Free Schools initiative—a program dedicated to reducing TB incidence among schoolchildren and fostering healthier learning environments.
"Through this partnership, we hope to not only reduce the incidence of tuberculosis in the targeted schools but also raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention,” Mukul Kumar, Co-Founder and President, Engineering, PubMatic, said. “Our goal is to empower students, teachers, and their families with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves, ultimately creating a ripple effect of healthier, TB-free communities. By creating safer school environments, we hope to contribute to the broader fight against TB at a grassroots level.”

KSAS Meets with Ashoka University and Joins FICCI Summit in New Delhi
Veronica Donahue, Associate Dean of the Advanced Academic Programs, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, recently traveled to India on behalf of KSAS where she visited Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana.
“The University provides a world-class education that fosters critical thinking, leadership, and social impact. I shared information about KSAS master’s and PhD programs during a well-attended Graduate Fair. Ashoka students expressed their interest in many areas of the arts and sciences, including psychology, economics, astronomy, and physics,” she said “The following day, I presented at the 19th Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI) Higher Education Summit 2024 in New Delhi - Changing Paradigms of Higher Education in The Global Landscape.”
The summit panels discussed how universities can explore new strategies to address global and complex challenges. Dr. Donahue specifically homed in on the changing mission of universities to meet emerging societal needs, highlighting developments since the 1980s and growing opportunities that have resulted as universities have expanded their missions to meet a more sustainable future.

Indian Students More Inclined to Public Health, Engineering, Computer Science Courses, Shares Dean of Johns Hopkins University

In an interview with Times Now, Carey Business School Dean Dr. Alexander Triantis discussed how the presence of Indian students on campus is expected to increase, especially in Public Health courses. They also discussed the importance of GKII's new Women in STEMM Fellowship as this shift occurs.
"The Women in STEMM Fellowship is designed to support early-career women scientists in India by providing mentorship, leadership training, and networking opportunities. While women are well-represented in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) education, increasing their presence in leadership roles is crucial for fostering innovation and diversity in research. The fellowship will support 40 women in each cohort over an 18–20-month period, equipping them with the skills and networks needed to thrive in senior positions. By building on the strong foundation of India’s STEMM talent, this programme seeks to contribute to advancing gender equity and strengthening India’s research landscape."

Dirty Water, Poor Diet: A Recipe for Rising Infection Among Indian Children

Robert E. Black Chair in International Health Dr. Judd Walson spoke to India Today about the connection between health systems and environmental factors that lead to an increase in infectious diseases and malnutrition among children. "Malnutrition isn't just about insufficient food intake. It's also about exposure to contaminated environments and the body's inability to absorb nutrients effectively. Addressing these root causes is key to breaking this vicious cycle," Dr. Walson said.

The Path to Excellence: The Basic Projects Foundation
Chirashree Manik, MS, Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Track; KSAS '25, was featured in the Republic Day editions of Times of India and Navbharat Times. She discussed her India-based social impact project fighting intergenerational poverty.
“Impact isn’t always loud—it’s in the quiet dignity of a mother providing for her children, the confidence of a student daring to dream, and the strength of a community reclaiming its agency. Every challenge has reinforced my belief that sustainable change happens when we truly listen and meet people where they are,” Manik said.

The presentation will include information on job searching strategies, navigating the USA’s work culture, leveraging the alumni network, and VISA and OPT/CPT work requirements. Foundations in Clinical Infectious Diseases Course
Dates: February 28 – March 2, 2025
The Johns Hopkins Division of Infectious Diseases is convening a course in Chennai, India, for primary care providers that covers various infectious diseases commonly encountered in primary care settings. Through eight comprehensive online modules and a 2.5 day in-person conference, healthcare professionals will develop knowledge and skills needed to effectively address, manage, and prevent infectious diseases, while promoting optimal patient outcomes.

GKII Girish and Himangi Rishi Student Travel Awards
Deadline: February 6, 2025
These awards support JHU masters students from any JHU school, division, department, or center traveling to India through the Center for Global Health (CGH) Global Health Established Field Placements (GHEFP) program for the purpose of research, field practicums, internships, or capstone projects at India placement sites. Each travel award offers a $3,500 grant per awardee. GKII will support up to 10 JHU students in the 2025 GHRSTA award cycle.

Catalyst Awards

JHU Catalyst Awards support promising research and creative endeavors of early career faculty with the goal of launching them on a path to a sustainable and rewarding academic career. These grant awards of up to $75,000 are available to faculty between three and ten years from their initial faculty appointment.

Discovery Awards
Deadline: February 14, 2025
JHU Discovery Awards provide grants to cross-divisional teams in order to spark new, synergistic interactions between investigators across the institution. These grants of up to $100,000 are available to teams of faculty and/or non-faculty members representing at least two separate divisions of the university.

Grant Accelerator Program for Junior and Midlevel Faculty
Deadline: February 15, 2025
The Grant Accelerator Program will provide onetime grants of $5,000–$15,000 to junior and midlevel faculty members to help them overcome barriers to successful grant submissions. These small awards provide a way to rapidly fund data acquisition and analysis that investigators need as part of their grant applications. The funds may be spent at any of the Cores on iLab. Both clinical and laboratory projects are appropriate for this program.

Data Science and AI Institute Demonstration Projects
Deadline: March 3, 2025
The Johns Hopkins Data Science and AI Institute is accepting proposals aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools in critical applications. The program is open to all researchers at JHU and will support long-term demonstration projects on high-impact translational projects that bring together researchers of different expertise and skill sets across the institution.

SNF Agora Visiting Fellows Program
Deadline: March 5, 2025
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins is now accepting applications for its 2025–26 visiting fellows program. The fellowship provides individuals from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to develop projects that strengthen democracy. Fellows will receive a stipend of up to $25,000 to support projects on the themes of “AI for the Public Good” or “Modernizing Civics Education at the University Level.”

These awards of up to $500-$1000 support current part-time and full-time JHU degree students across all divisions and schools for events or projects related to global women’s health and gender equity.
