TCNA President's Message
Pat Hawthorne
| |
I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!
I am pleased to report that the 39th Street Traffic Calming Project has been completed. We are very proud of the outcome and are already seeing a significant reduction in speeding. And, drivers are now actually stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalks!! Many, many thanks to all who helped shepherd it through, particularly Tom and Nina Knoche, owners of the Broadview; major donors (Johns Hopkins University, Hopkins House, Avenue5, and the TCNA); governmental officials (in particular Councilwoman Odette Ramos and Delegate Maggie McIntosh); and all the members of our community who volunteered their time and effort to make the project a success.
On Wednesday, November 13th, we celebrated the project’s completion at Cypriana’s during which we were able to individually thank those who contributed to the project’s success. Approximately 60 people attended to celebrate and enjoy delicious appetizers from chef Maria’s kitchen. And, of special note, we raised our glasses in memory of our beloved neighbor, Mary Pat Clarke, who passed away on November 10 after a brief illness.
Finally, in the last newsletter we welcomed two new members of the TCNA Board: Jack Boyton and Brandon Eilertson. This month we need to report that two members needed to step down: Julie Watson, our fabulous web master, and John Warshawsky, who served on the Public Safety Committee. We thank them for them service and wish them well!

39th Street Calming Plan is Working
Although the project is completed, there is still work to be done.
| |
First and foremost: the plants in the pots need to be maintained. If you would like to donate money to maintain a pot (estimated to be $40/year) or if you would like to adopt-a-pot and give the plants a little TLC, send us an e-mail to presidenttcna@gmail.com with your name and address and we will send you instructions for doing so.
Also, the Broadview had to post a bond in the amount of $79,529 to ensure completion of the project. There is currently a short-fall that needs to be closed. If you would like to make a donation (any amount will be appreciated) please e-mail us at presidenttcna@gmail.com with your name and address and we will send you a donation form.
Each donor will receive a coupon for a discount at one of our local restaurants: Cypriana, Alizée, the Ambassador, One World Café, or Kanom Café. Let us know which coupon you would like.

The 8 speed bumps are working.
3 ADA walkways to cross 39th Street have been installed.
New signs are helping to slow traffic.
| |
Tuscany Road Calming Project
A Tuscany Road working group in conjunction with Calvert School is exploring traffic calming options on Tuscany Road. In the spring of 2024 fifteen Tuscany Road and Tuscany Court neighbors put in 311 requests to slow traffic on Tuscany Road.
The City has agreed to do a study of the traffic issue on Tuscany Road this fall. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED AS OF NOVEMBER 30, 2024. TCNA has contacted the City to determine when this study will be done.

Calvert Liaison November Committee Report
Amy Mutch, Chair
On November 20 the TCNA Calvert Liaison Committee held its quarterly meeting. Topics discussed with Calvert School included traffic safety, carpools, events on campus, landscaping and maintenance, city codes for trash collection and sidewalk repairs.
As chair, when I receive your email about a particular concern that is identified as significant change or hardship, I immediately contact Calvert School about this issue. Calvert responds quickly with the action that they are taking to resolve the issue.
Recent complaints of parents double parking on Canterbury after collecting their child has caused unsafe congestion at 3 pm. Calvert agreed to send an email regarding traffic and carpool etiquette. A suggestion was made to encourage parents to share information with childcare providers who are responsible for carpooling.
Calvert has one minor project left to complete and awaits city permitting. The asphalt in the rear of the lower school is to be replaced with an artificial turf and is expected to take only two days.

Ridgemede (1940) & Ridgewood (1966)
Ridgemede Condos
221 Ridgemede Road
Built as apartments in (1940)
Converted to Condos (1991)
The Ridgemede was the last apartment building built in Tuscany-Canterbury before World War II. It was built by the Mullan Construction Company who designed the building to match the Tudor style of the homes on Ridgemede and Tuscany Roads. Leaded glass windows similar to the homes in the area were installed in the entrance of the building. The five-story building follows the slope of the hill down to Linkwood Road. The challenge of building on a hillside, was solved by constructing a building that is entered on the third floor.
| |
Ridgewood Condos
310 Ridgemede Road
Built as Apartments (1966)
Converted to Condos (1991)
The Ridgewood, located on Ridgemede and opposite the apartment house of the same name, developed from a long and hard-fought, though entirely civilized battle between TCNA and the owner, Thomas Mullan of the Mullan Construction Company. After nine years of proposals and counter-proposals, of zoning threats and complaints about the eyesore created by the ten acres of vacant property, TCNA eventually agreed to thirty instead of forty apartments with adjacent parking behind the building and no commercial offices.

Parking Sign at The Social
Up One Day and Down the Next Day
| |
In the summer of 2024, TCNA and Councilwoman Ramos met with the manager of The Social and the their parking consultant about a sign offering public parking. The Social removed the sign and promised no further parking signs would be put up. So TCNA was shocked when a sign reappeared in October 2024. Councilwomen Odette Ramos contacted the Social.
This is a quote and a summary of the response that she received from the parking consultant. "We are shocked to see the street sign back up. Someone onsite put that up when it never should have been. It was a mistake, and it was taken down and thrown away immediately. I am sorry and sorry and very annoyed (like you)."
There is no, and will be no, public parking . The property owners have decided to charge parkers who are visitors to the building. This is allowed in City Zoning regulations. Doing this allows The Social to monitor their lot, which is not currently possible. They will know every car on their lot and who the cars' owners are visiting.

Zoning Board allows live entertainment at proposed Rotunda restaurant and event space.
Despite strong opposition from some Hampden residents, Baltimore’s zoning board voted 4 to 0 with one abstention to approve a restaurant operator’s request to offer live entertainment seven days a week.

The 20 best art museums in America
November 2, 2024
The Washington Post’s art critics rank their favorite museums across the country based on collections, exhibitions, and history of public engagement.
Baltimore Museum of Art is in the top 20!
There’s more to the Baltimore Museum of Art than the legendary Cone collection, the massive trove of modern art acquired by the Cone sisters in the early decades of the 20th century. But that collection alone, with major works by Picasso, Matisse, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin and Van Gogh, would put the museum on the international map. Located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, the museum has made valiant and sometimes controversial efforts — including the sale of major works to acquire more contemporary ones — to keep its focus on the living and evolving contemporary art world.
A 2022 exhibition, “Guarding the Art,” gave the museum’s guards the opportunity to curate their own view of its phenomenal collection, a daring decision to empower museum workers who are not the usual elite gatekeepers.
