A Checklist for “Partial Retirement”

Many of our Office for Senior Faculty Affairs programs focus on how to cut back from full-time work while still staying involved in MGH activities. This can mean transitioning to part-time or staying connected to MGH after full retirement, which we’ve grouped under the heading of “partial retirement.”

Wouldn’t it be great to access the guidelines and resources for partial retirement all in one place? OSFA has you covered with the Partial Retirement Checklist.

  • The first set of items on the checklist are for going part-time. For HMS, part-time appointments are for faculty working at an HMS affiliate 1 to 4 days per week while maintaining the required 50 hours of teaching per year. For maintaining MGH benefits, the requirement is at least a 50% FTE position.
  • Next on the checklist is fully retiring while staying connecting to HMS/MGH. For HMS privileges such as library use, potential titles are Professor Emeritus (available only to professors) and Corresponding Member of the Faculty. Maintaining MGH privileges such as email and parking depends on approaching your department chair and agreeing on an MGH title such as non-employee.
  • The checklist also links you to the OSFA Transition and Stay Connected list. Sign-up here if you’re willing to be contacted about projects related to your expertise, such as specialized committees.
  • Negotiating these pathways isn’t necessarily straightforward. The checklist has additional links to watch past webinars on full and partial retirement or to schedule a 1:1 consultation with me.

Another great upcoming partial retirement program is Stephanie and Russell Eisenstat’s “Crafting the Next Chapter” webinar on Wed March 18 at noon. You can register here.

With warm wishes to all,

Steve
