Social Action Committee (SAC) Presents a Climate Justice Movie

February 7, 2025 - 5:00 p.m.

Followed by a discussion after the movie.

The congregation is invited to a SAC event on Feb 7, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. There will be a mixer and light dinner of chili (meat and vegan choices), bread and something sweet. This will be followed by an engaging documentary film, "For Tomorrow," related to grassroots climate justice innovation, and a discussion.

Bring your appetite and an open mind! AND please invite your friends. Let's all come out and show our wonderful Social Action Committee some love. Climate change was the #1 most cared about issue on our last congregational survey. See you there!

“Compassion, Courage & Possibilities"

Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

Compassion and courage makes an individual look into themselves to recognize and to acknowledge one’s faults and shortcomings. This is tough stuff. Compassion and courage awakens us to think and to act in less self -centered ways. Compassion and courage connects us with the rest of our fellow human beings resulting in brotherly and sisterly love, sometimes referred to as agape or unconditional love.

If we are fortunate, out of this compassion springs forth generosity of spirit to ourselves and to our world. This generosity springs forth from the human heart which is the seat of courage and love. It is one thing to feel compassion, yet it takes courage to act on it. And when we do act on it, our lives collectively and individually, begins to be filled with endless possibilities for we are choosing love over fear.

Free Event - Swannanoa Valley Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Gathering

February 8, 2025, 9 a.m.

Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, we will not charge admission to this year’s Prayer Gathering, nor will we ask local businesses for ads during this time of rebuilding.

Our keynote speaker for 2025 will be Dr. Irene Owens, former Dean and Professor at North Carolina Central University, School of Library and Information Sciences, where she created a fund to support new students of color and those interested in diversity, equity and inclusion issues. During the gathering, Dr. Owens will speak upon our continuing theme of “Building the

Beloved Community.”

On Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 9 a.m., the event will take place at Saint James Episcopal Church, 424 West State Street, Black Mountain, NC. A community choir will provide musical inspiration and light refreshments will follow the program. Our local students still need college scholarship assistance. Please help us fulfill our mission by bringing donations to the gathering, contributing on our website svmlk.org or sending checks to SVMLK, P.O. Box 1613, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Cherokee Retreat

March 11 - 16, 2025

For five days, retreat participants will attend presentations by Cherokee tribal members on a variety of topics centered around Cherokee spirituality. The legends, language, sense of place, history, culture, connection and food will slowly reveal the depth of the Cherokee spirituality and offer participants a background to reflect on their own expression of spiritual growth. The times of prayer and theological reflection will integrate the learning with the participant’s own life experience.
