Game Over: Ending Corporate Agriculture's Game of Monopoly

- Here's How You Can Take Action Before the Elections -

We just co-hosted a webinar with Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, featuring Austin Frerick and NFFC member farmers, about the corporate control of our food and farm system, and how we can fight back! The full webinar is now available to watch on Youtube.

"When we have a problem, like we have right now, you can either say 'well, there's nothing I can do about it,' and turn your back. Or, you can try."

-Barb Kalbach

Our panelists gave us hope and inspired us to take action, especially with elections only a few days away! First, make sure that you are registered to vote and informed about your candidates, from federal right down to the local level. Vote.org is an excellent resource for everything you need to know! Our friends at HEAL Food Alliance also made an incredible voter guide centering our food system.

You can also take a few moments to sign NFFC's action alerts supporting the the bills we advocating for that directly challenge the corporate control of our food and farms. Together, we can make change that lasts!

Reflections from Farm Aid

We had a wonderful time at this year's Farm Aid! In addition to being one of our closest allies, Farm Aid is a chance to bring together farmers, fishers, ranchers, and eaters to celebrate with and inspire each other. Of course, the delicious homegrown food and incredible music is a HUGE plus! Fourteen of our member organizations joined festival and pre-concert events.

Visit our website to read our full recap, including reflections from members, and check out all the different ways that our members got involved in this year's festival.

Updates from United Nations Committee on World Food Security

NFFC National Programs and Policy Coordinator Jordan Treakle just attended the 52nd plenary of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), as part of the Civil Society and Indigenous People's Mechanism (CSIPM) working group on Equity. This working group focuses on the ways in which people are marginalized through inequity and power imbalances, and works towards transformative policies to reduce inequalities for food security, nutrition and more. At CFS 52, CSIPM pushed for important additions centering intersectionality and connecting equity to power to the CFS Policy Recommendations on Reducing Inequalities for Food Security and Nutrition.

We also just joined more than 100 civil society and Indigenous Peoples' organizations in releasing the Peoples’ Manifesto on the Right to Adequate Food and Nutrition calling for food justice! The manifesto calls for urgent global action to ensure the right to food for all, and concrete political actions to transform the food systems towards equity, peace and justice.

GM Wheat is A Phony Climate Solution

In August, the USDA cleared the way for the production of GM wheat in the US. This variety of wheat, Biocere's HB4, has been pitched to farmers as a tool to increase yields and as a tech solution to the climate crisis. Jim Goodman and Anthony Pahnke (Family Farm Defenders) point out the environmental and economic harms of new GM wheat in this article for Common Dreams.
