NOVEMBER | 2024

As Thanksgiving approaches, we’re reminded of the power of gratitude in our lives. At Vinje, we believe that being thankful isn’t just a one-time event or a seasonal feeling; it’s a way of life. A thankful heart shapes who we are and how we live every day.

Thankful people are enduring. They don’t turn away when things get tough; they keep going, knowing that God walks with them. In a world that often demands more, faster, and better, a gratitude gives us resilience. It reminds us of the many blessings we’ve already received and helps us endure even through some of the worst times of our lives.

Thankful people are content. They aren’t driven by “what’s next?” or “what’s more?” They live with the comfort that God provides enough. While the world around us pushes us to seek more—more possessions, more success, more approval—thankful people find joy in what they already have. They know their worth doesn’t come from what they have or what they achieve but from being a beloved child of God.

Thankful people are giving. Because they see their lives as filled with blessings, they’re inspired to share what they have with others. Whether it’s time, talents, or money, thankful people give generously because they know the joy that comes from making a difference. And when all our gifts are shared together, God can do amazing things through us.

Thankful people are also hopeful. They look to the future with trust that God has good things in store. They find hope in the promises of Scripture and the love of Christ, not in the uncertainties of the world. With hope, they greet each day with open hands and an open heart, ready for whatever God has in store.

And finally, thankful people are present in the moment. They aren’t rushing to the next thing or living in the past. They take time to be fully where they are—to notice God’s work here and now, to appreciate the people around them, and to see and give thanks for life’s little blessings every day.

This November, let’s all try to remind each other what Thanksgiving is all about: giving thanks. Because when we are thankful people, we are enduring, content, giving, hopeful, and fully present. As we give thanks for what we have, let’s all live out these qualities, shining a light of God’s love and peace in a world that so deeply needs it.

And, as a special treat, you can also have a beer while you’re here because, what goes better with lefse and lutefisk than a nice, frosty ale?! Beers will be $7 each and will be available for purchase in the Vinje Courtyard during the event! Grab a beer before or after your dinner. PRAISE & PLAY UPDATE

Three years ago, Vinje began operating Praise & Play in Spicer as part of our commitment to meeting the community’s childcare needs. We have been incredibly proud of the dedication our staff has shown in serving Spicer families and providing meaningful faith formation to their wonderful children. With the rise in in-home childcare options and additional preschool programs in the area, however, it is now time to consolidate our ministry into our two Willmar centers. This transition will enable us to focus fully on providing high-quality care and faith-based education at Loving Arms and Discovery Hill, where we look forward to welcoming children from Praise & Play in the coming weeks.

On the current 2024 Minnesota election ballot is Amendment 1. This amendment extends the dedication of lottery-derived revenue (Not tax money) to the Environmental and Natural Resources Fund for 25 years. This money has been used for wonderful projects in past years (Trail building, State Park improvements, and others). The Creation Care Committee strongly recommends a “Yes” vote on this amendment. We think this amendment IS creation care.

SOLAR LIGHTS FOR UKRAINE

We are so grateful for all the contributions towards the purchase of solar lights for Ukraine! We hope you’ll plan to join us to assemble them on December 3 at 6:30.

Here’s what happened at the October 28th meeting:

  • Received a financial update and discussed the 2025 budget process.
  • Approved a recommendation from the Loving Arms board to consolidate our childcare ministries to our two Willmar locations. Operations in Spicer will cease on November 29.
  • Transferred $38,000 from the general fund to a interest-bearing savings account for a future roof replacement and building renovation capital campaign.
  • Declined a request to provide pastoral services to Svea Lutheran Church for a three-month period in 2025.
  • Received a positive update on our pastoral sharing agreements with Saint John’s and Kerkhoven.

EXPLORING VINJE'S HISTORY

This month, Kris Swanson shares a story of a Jello contest fundraiser that was held as a benefit for the handbell choir many years ago.

In April, 2006, the JuBellation handbell choir decided to hold a fundraiser for an upcoming festival that they would be attending. These festivals included workshops and several levels of bell choirs that practiced then performed in a closing concert. Costs included music, registration for each participant and hotel accommodations.

Since the church basement ladies were popular at that time, we decided to have that as the theme for the fundraiser. One can’t have a “church basement” meal without the beloved Jello, so we had a contest to accompany the meal. There were a few categories, and last month’s picture in this section (included below) was actually of the four judges-Bobbi Gates, Fern Hauge, Jim Tiede, and Swan Johnson (rather than of a LAFF event, as initially thought). The contest was well attended and a lot of fun was had. John Palmer won in the children’s division, Diane Rasmussen won for the most detailed (rainbow layers), and the Hund family won for the most unusual, a molded brain.

The bell choir donned aprons, hats and gloves. We catered in hotdish (which ended up costing more than we planned!) and everyone else brought potluck salads and desserts. We didn’t make a lot of money, but it sure was fun!!

Make a one-time contribution or set up reoccurring giving here. Need help? Call the church office!
