Born to a German father and a Mexican mother, Frida Kahlo spent much of her artistic career exploring her identity through expressive self-portraits that bordered between depicting her ancestry from the European side and the Indigenous Mexican side respectively. Beyond her colorful artworks, she lived an equally colorful life. Frida's final words in her journal read, "I hope the exit is joyful -- and I hope never to come back." In this presentation from the Cornerstone History Symposium, Professor Karri L. Fritz-Klaus will leave attendees convinced that even in death, Frida is full of life.

Interlibrary Loan
Did you know interlibrary loan (ILL) makes it possible for library users to request materials unavailable at Milwaukee County libraries from libraries located outside of Milwaukee County?
Loan periods for items borrowed through ILL are set by the lending library. No more than five items can be requested at one time.
If an item is new (published within the last 2 years), it would not typically qualify for ILL and you can suggest it via "Suggest a Title" here.
To request an item via ILL or for questions regarding ILL, contact the Information Desk at (414) 847-2670 or via email: Shorewood@mcfls.org

Friends of the Shorewood Public Library: Yard Sign Campaign
The Friends of the Shorewood Public Library are planning to fill the village with yard signs in support of the library, beginning on April 6 when National Library Week kicks off.
This year’s yard sign campaign will be bigger than ever. And signs with a new slogan will replace the “I Love the Shorewood Library” signs that have been used in the past.
Got an idea for a great new slogan you’d like to share? A contest to choose a new yard sign slogan is being hosted by the Friends. Entries can be submitted using this Library Yard Sign Campaign link. The contest closes on Feb. 28 and a winner will be announced in March.

Friends of the Shorewood Public Library: Annual Meeting Update
At its annual meeting last month, the Friends of the Shorewood Public Library board reviewed its 2024 contributions to the library, including more than $27,000 for collections and programming.
The Friends shared goals for 2025, too. Chief among these is funding the remodeling of the Early Learning Center and planning for a new Shorewood Reads community event (to be held in 2026).
Heidi Frenzel, who oversees library volunteers, was named the Friends’ Volunteer of the Year. Heidi has held various board positions since 2021, including serving on the search committee for the new library director. Congratulations and thank you, Heidi! 🎉

Tapestry
Carol King
"Yeah, I know. Favorite uplifting album is Tapestry. So cliché. But you try putting it on and tell me it’s not a warm hug that inspires smiling, dancing, nostalgia, and a sudden inclination to perform household chores. I could put it on a thousand times and still find something new in it, almost kind of like…a tapestry. And if Amy Sherman-Palladino likes it, well then I like it. A great listen for winter blues or summertime sadness."
| |
"With uplifting ballads such as "Nina Cried Power" and dreamy atmospheric pieces like "Wasteland, baby!" it checks all the boxes for a feel-good, cozy time. My personal favorite song on the album is "To noise making (sing)" because of its bright sound and uplifting message." | |
