:: Celebrating 50 Years of Impact

CAPA's Golden Anniversary

This year, we’re excited to celebrate CAPA’s 50th anniversary—a remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime milestone for any organization. We wouldn't be here today without YOU—our dedicated donors, funders, community partners, volunteers, staff, and board members (past and present). Your support, advocacy, and unwavering belief in our mission have made five decades of transformative impact possible for generations of local families.

A Legacy of Compassion

In 1975, CAPA was founded by a group of concerned citizens and community leaders. Recognizing the growing needs of families and the rise in incidents of child abuse and neglect, they secured funding to launch a volunteer-led parenting helpline and incorporate CAPA as a 501c3 organization, laying the foundation for CAPA’s future.

Throughout the year, we will share stories from CAPA’s rich history, honoring the people and partnerships that have shaped our journey. From the impactful programs we’ve developed to the lives we’ve touched, we look forward to reflecting on how far we’ve come.

Start the New Year with Strengths-Based Goal Setting

By Clarisha Blaylock, Staff Therapist

As we welcome the new year, it’s a great time to reflect and set goals that foster growth and well-being for yourself and your family. Here are some tips for setting healthy, achievable goals:

  1. Start with Strengths: Focus on what you and your family are already doing well. Build on those strengths to set meaningful goals that are motivating and attainable.
  2. Reflect on the Past: Ask yourself what has worked and what hasn’t. This reflection can guide you toward setting realistic goals and avoiding unnecessary frustration.
  3. Take One Step at a Time: Break each goal down into smaller, actionable steps, and celebrate progress together.
  4. Model Healthy Communication: Share your goals with your family and invite them to do the same.
  5. Practice Active Listening: Show curiosity and openness by actively listening to each other’s ideas and needs. This creates a supportive environment for growth.
  6. Stay Open to Change: Life happens, and sometimes goals need to shift. Teach flexibility by revisiting goals regularly and making adjustments as needed.

Goal setting can be a wonderful way to strengthen family connections and cultivate personal growth. Start small, stay consistent, and remember—it’s about progress, not perfection!

:: New Staff and Board Member

Welcome Rose and Tanesha!

We are excited to welcome Rose Schmitt to CAPA as a school-based therapist. Rose joined CAPA as a clinical counseling intern in January 2023 and recently earned her Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Avila University. Passionate about supporting children and families, Rose is thrilled to continue her journey with CAPA in her “dream job.” In her free time, she enjoys running, reading, and spending time with her fiancé and her dog Tucker.

We’re also thrilled to welcome Tanesha Thompson to CAPA’s Board of Directors. With more than a decade of experience in the Head Start arena, Tanesha has led programs focused on education, health, family services, and community engagement. Her passion for connecting with people and fostering early childhood education will be a tremendous asset to our mission. Outside of work, Tanesha is active in service organizations and is a proud mom to her 10-year-old daughter.

Please join us in welcoming Tanesha and Rose to the CAPA team!
