Over the past 6 weeks, executive orders and federal policy shifts have restructured the landscape of refugee resettlement. From the suspension of refugee admissions to a stop work order on resettlement services, our refugee neighbors are at risk.
On January 20, the Trump administration issued an executive order indefinitely suspending the US Refugee admissions program. Given how resettlement serves to reunite families within Sacramento’s Afghan population, this has had devastating repercussions within our community.
On January 24, the State Department issued stop work orders on all foreign assistance programs, leaving refugees stranded without access to housing support or basic services. To make matters worse, we have not been reimbursed for services provided under this program since April, leaving gaps in critical funding for resettlement services.
Afghans, Ukrainians, and Venezuelans are at risk – including here in Northern California. As these communities face the potential revocation of their Humanitarian Parole and Temporary Protected Status, this leaves our neighbors at risk of deportation and loss of work authorizations.
