Grassroots Advocacy Outreach

Plan Your Grassroot Advocacy for 2025!

MVCDs that have new legislators are encouraged to reach out to them, share information, and get to know their district staff. This will help set the stage for Legislative Day in March when MVCDs come to Sacramento to meet with legislators and their policy staff.

To learn more about the importance of grassroots advocacy please check out this slide deck and you can access MVCAC’s grassroots advocacy toolkit here.

On the legislative outreach section of the MVCAC website there is a spreadsheet with contact information for all of the legislators and the corresponding MVCDs. On that webpage there is also a New Legislator Toolkit with factsheets to share, a Grassroots Advocacy Toolkit that has a sample outreach email, and bios for all of the legislators. If you have any questions, please contact Jeremy Wittie, Legislative Committee Chair, at JWittie@cvmosquito.org or Meagan Luevano, PR Committee Chair, at meaganl@placermosquito.org

For 2025, the scheduled recess periods are as follows:

AMCA Announces Request for Pre-Proposals for evaluating Culicoides control technologies and related topics. Submissions due by Friday, February 7th

The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) invites short, one page pre-proposals (white paper, letter of intent) for evaluating Culicoides control technologies and related topics for funding for calendar year 2025-2026. From these, several projects will be selected for a full proposal phase. Currently, it is expected that multiple projects will be awarded that allow for approximately $100,000-200,000 in total funding for a 1 year project.

Questions of a technical or scientific nature should be directed to Dr. Edmund Norris (Edmund.Norris@usda.gov) or Dr. Rebecca Heinig (rheinig@thermacell.net). Questions of an administrative nature should be directed to Megan MacNee (MMacNee@mosquito.org).

For Sale: Sacramento-Yolo MVCD Jeep Wranglers

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District is in the process of selling seven right hand drive Jeep Wranglers that have been used as catch basin treatment vehicles. These Jeeps were originally purchased from a private dealership who had previously purchased them via auction.

Our shop has outfitted them with strobe lights and augmented tailgate mounting hardware for tool boxes. The Jeeps have been regularly serviced since their arrival here, from basic oil changes and rotations to major repairs. These 2005 Jeeps range in mileage from 101,000 to 170,000. Our shop supervisor maintains repair records and could provide more information if needed.

Please contact our shop supervisor, Robert Fowler, at rfowler@fightthebite.net for more information.

Send in Tick Program Updates

Dear MVCAC Members,

As part of our ongoing efforts to support tick surveillance and Lyme disease prevention, please remember to provide any updates to your district’s tick programs to Paula Macedo, who is serving as our representative on the Lyme Disease Advisory Council. You can reach her at pmacedo@contracostamosquito.com.

Additionally, please contact DART to grant permission to share tick data with third parties. This collaboration will help strengthen our public health initiatives and contribute to a broader understanding of tick-borne disease risks across California.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued support in advancing our vector control efforts.

Best regards,

Conlin
