Authors from an Archives of Toxicology study report that probiotic supplementation can reduce the negative impacts of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) on neurodevelopment, behavior, and metabolism. PBDEs are fire-retardant chemicals that are found everywhere -- upholstery, carpets, curtains, electronics, and even infant products. Known to disrupt hormones and persist in the environment, these pollutants have been detected in water, soil, air, food products, animals, human tissues, and even breast milk.

Probiotics, compared with antidepressants and placebo, may be efficacious as an adjunct or standalone therapy for treating major depression, according to a study from Nutrition Reviews.

The administration of probiotics positively modulates the immune system by maintaining homeostasis between individual immune system cells, according to a study from Nutrients. Thus, they have a clear influence on the processes occurring in asthma, especially reducing mucus secretion in the airway, improve parameters of forced expiratory volume, peak expiratory flow, and reduced inflammation.

Steve: We certainly have not forgotten about salicylates. Let's hope you have not, especially if you are salicylate sensitive. To refresh your memory, or for those who are not familiar with salicylates, here is a great explanation from an abstract from a review in the November 2024 issue of Nutrition Reviews.

"Salicylates are generally present in plants as part of their defense system against pathogens and environmental stress. Major dietary sources of salicylates were found in spices and herbs, such as curry and paprika (hot powder). Several studies suggest that these natural salicylates offer health benefits in the human body, such as antidiabetic, anticancer, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, despite their advantages, salicylates can be harmful to people with allergies, and high doses of salicylates may cause respiratory alkalosis and gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, salicylates can interact with certain drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and warfarin. Based on the literature review and analysis of results, it can be concluded that the dietary intake of salicylates in vegetarians can be relatively high, resulting in concentrations of salicylic acid in the blood and urine that are comparable to those observed in patients taking a low dose of aspirin (75 mg)."

As the authors of this review purport, salicylates can be protective or destructive depending upon the individual. This is why some can tolerate aspirin and some cannot. Salicylates are what allows half of our clientele to benefit from turmeric/curcumin and the other half react adversely.

Salicylates are yet another in a laundry list of examples of why dietary ingredients and supplements are good for some but not others. That is why it is so important to individualize your dietary needs. With regard to salicylates, we have decades of experience identifying and working with those who are sensitive/intolerant.
