Dear Farm Friends,
To farm is to tend. We tend our people, the plants, soil, and water. Then step aside and the magic happens. And the tending is pretty basic: say hello, make lists, and start lifting things. I’ve often joked that 90% of farming is loading and unloading. It starts happening long before plants go in the ground, get harvested into heavy crates, and packed into boxes for your pickup site.
At this time of year, right on the cusp of the spring rush, there are pallets of potting mix and organic soil amendments to load and unload. And then load again into tractors for use in the greenhouse or spreading in the fields. Parts for equipment (we break stuff, we wreck stuff, we wear it out!) get loaded and shipped from who knows where mysterious networks. A tool arrives to fix broken tire chains for the weekly run over Donner summit to deliver produce to Truckee, Tahoe, and Reno.
All loaded and unloaded, again and again.
I’m moved by the magic of the lively green plants sprouting and growing, somehow, despite it all. Also by the magic of the myriad hands lifting and letting go. Tending.
Thanks everyone.
