Dear Farm Friends,

Farmer interview: Chelsi Torres, 29.

Our newest Mountain Bounty Farmer, Chelsi, joined the crew last September and has already made a big impact.

Hi Chelsi, can you introduce yourself and tell us how you got here?

I grew up in Nevada County and had been living in Reno for the past five years, I moved back because my partner and I had the opportunity to buy land near Grass Valley with some friends. I was farming with an Americorps program at the Desert Farming Initiative in Reno. I loved it there and wanted to continue farming.

It just so happened that Mountain Bounty was hiring in the middle of the season so it felt like a serendipitous opportunity. I’m very glad to be up here.

I went to school in Maine at college of the Atlantic for their sustainable farming and biology programs. The California universities I looked at had programs that were more geared towards industrial ag.

I got to do some hands on farming, as well as visit places like Eliot Coleman‘s farm in Maine, and to study sustainable farming and business practices along the way.

This is a much different place than the urban farm in Reno. One of the best things about working here is the people, I’ve made a bunch of friends on the crew.

This upcoming season I’m going to be training to be the Wholesale Manager. The Wholesale Manager is responsible for our sales to local stores, restaurants, and schools. I’m especially excited about working with the schools to get more organic produce to the kids. And I love seeing our produce at Briar Patch.

Thanks Chelsi, we are so happy you are here!

Bread Share CSA

Provided by Deer Creek Bakehouse Nevada City

Our new CSA Bread Share is a year round, weekly delivery of Country Sourdough Bread from Deer Creek Bakehouse in Nevada City.

Based in Nevada City, Deer Creek Bakehouse crafts rustic, naturally-leavened breads with an emphasis on whole grains, long, slow fermentation, and a bold bake to bring out the best character in every loaf. The Country Sourdough is their flagship loaf. It’s a great work horse sourdough, and pairs well with just about anything. All loaves are hand made with 100% organic flours, much of which is locally milled.

You have probably tried their bread local restaurants such as Lola (The National Hotel), Restaurant Dakan (The Stonehouse), Brewbilt Brewhaus, and more!

Each week you will receive a loaf of freshly baked bread, delivered to your convenient CSA pickup location. This subscription is limited to 50 members, so be sure to grab a spot soon! Deliveries begin Feb 12th.

Recipes (including a "use it up" section for last week's leftovers), storage tips and inspiration:

  • Japanese Sweet Potatoes are unique in that they are drier and sweeter than their orange cousins. This means that, depending on at what temperature and for how long you bake them, you can achieve a cake like texture, or a creamy, cheesecake like consistency! Check out this article one Baked Japanese Sweet Potatoes (Click here) to learn a few different methods for baking these beauties to bring out their special flavor and texture!

  • Top your salads this week with Cilantro Lime Dressing (Click here). This recipe makes a vinaigrette style dressing, but you can add yogurt or the avocados from your fruit share to make it creamy!

"USE IT UP" WEEKLY RECIPE!

Use up leftover vegetables and avoid waste with this “Free-up-the-fridge” Leftover Roast Vegetable Frittata (Click here).

Eggs are a little pricy to come by in the stores these days, but my chickens have begun laying again, so hopefully you or a neighbor might have a backyard chicken-source to mitigate the cost.
