Retired Doctor Volunteers to Help Others

It should be no surprise that a doctor who spent his life helping people around the world would find joy in serving older adults in the Verde Valley.

After retiring from a life in pediatric medicine, Bob Ganelin found an outlet to help his community by volunteering at Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition. His calm demeanor that likely helped his former patients and coworkers stay cool under pressure now serves patients heading to-and-from doctor appointments.

As a volunteer, he enjoys listening to people’s stories and helping people whose biggest goal is to stay living in their community of choice.

“Many people just express that they want to remain at home and want to remain as independent as they can,” Bob said. “Some people have just been astounded at the service that Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition provides.”

Neighbor Examines Life, Aging Through Poetry

Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition Neighbor Liz has been fond of poetry her entire life, but only lightly dabbled when the mood struck her.

It wasn’t until she turned 79 — when some might expect her to slow down — that she decided to join a poetry group and pursue a new hobby. After living a long and filled life as a mother, therapist, and lover of Sedona’s magic, she has a lifetime of experiences to use as inspiration for verse.

She has self-published a poetry book titled, “Beyond Each Horizon.” The poems range from topics about family and friends, significant memories, the life and loss of her partner, and more. She hopes that when people read her poems, they can find comfort.

“If they identify with something — emotionally identify with it — then they’re not alone,” Liz said. “They’re not alone sitting in their house, in their room, not wanting to get dressed."

Free Local Concerts for Neighbors and Volunteers

Interested in attending a free local concert this weekend? What about in February? We're giving away tickets worth up to $65 for free!

If you are a Neighbor or a Volunteer and can transport a neighbor or would like to attend, please contact VVCC's Call Center at (928) 204-1238. Upon arrival at Sedona Performing Arts Center, simply go to Will Call and let them know you are a VVCC volunteer or a neighbor.

Call to receive tickets to one of these performances:

David Shifrin is one of today's most talented clarinetists, playing with an ensemble of violins, violas, and cellos. Next, the February performance features the real-life marriage of concert pianists, creating an appealing and impressive piano duo, called The Magic of Piano 4-Hands. We will also share tickets for upcoming performances in March and April.

VVCC thanks Chamber Music Sedona for this opportunity for our neighbors and to show appreciation to our volunteers and all the services they provide.

This Year's Gift Giving Tree Success!

The holidays are done, and we accomplished a lot!

Did you know that our elves delivered 220 gifts to older adult neighbors around the Verde Valley? It warms our hearts to know that so many people care about our neighbors having a jolly holiday. And our Neighbors were so grateful and impressed.

"Thank you for all the wonderful gifts. I was very surprised and delighted!" VVCC Neighbor Charles wrote in a card. "Thanks to all your work and for being there!"

Thanks to all who bought gifts, delivered, or helped spread the word. We hope you have a wonderful 2025!
