PROJECT UPDATE: The contractor is scheduled to mobilize to the project area on Monday, March 24, for the 2025 construction season, weather permitting. Crews will resume construction of the new U.S. Route 2 (U.S. 2) bridge over Interstate 89 (I-89) at Exit 17, focusing on installing forms for the upcoming concrete pour for the new bridge deck. From Monday, March 24 through Friday, March 28, there is potential for I-89 to be intermittently reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound. The project team will issue weekly Construction Updates for the 2025 construction season starting Friday, March 21.
Construction activities in 2025 will include completing the new U.S. 2 bridge over I-89, including the concrete deck and approach slabs. The new bridge, being constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, is expected to open to traffic by the end of the year. The U.S. 2 roadway will be realigned to the new bridge.
The project will also focus on improvements to the I-89 Exit 17 ramps and U.S. 2. Crews will finish constructing the new I-89 southbound on-ramp for U.S. 2 westbound, opening the on-ramp to traffic. The I-89 northbound ramps will be reconstructed, and the northbound deceleration lane extended. The project will mill, pave, and install line striping along I-89 in the vicinity of Exit 17. Additionally, U.S. 2 will be widened to add a left-turn lane at the I-89 northbound ramp intersection and additional turning lanes at the Chimney Corner Intersection. Traffic signals will be upgraded at U.S. 2 intersections with the I-89 Exit 17 ramps and U.S. 7.
Work will primarily take place during the day, Monday to Friday, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Some night work will be required for U.S. 2 bridge and I-89 northbound ramp construction. Traffic impacts will include shoulder and lane closures along U.S. 2, U.S. 7, I-89, and the I-89 Exit 17 ramps. There will be limited nighttime shutdowns of I-89 northbound and southbound, as well as the I-89 northbound ramps, with detour routes. Advance notice of these closures will be provided through Traffic Alerts. Work will continue this year through early winter, with an interim completion date of December 2025. The project is projected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
