Did You Know?

"Cognitive Load" Could Be Draining Your Mental Bandwidth

Legal professionals juggle complex cases, deadlines, and constant decision-making— all of which contribute to what's called cognitive load. This mental overload can lead to fatigue, forgetfulness, and decreased focus, even if you’re physically fine.

How to lighten your cognitive load:

Externalize tasks: Write down to-dos instead of keeping them in your head.

Batch similar tasks: Handle emails, calls, and paperwork in dedicated blocks.

Take decision breaks: Avoid back-to-back high-stakes decisions without a pause.

Simplify choices: Even small decisions, like what to eat for lunch, add up—try routine menus for busy days.

Reducing cognitive load isn't about working less—it's about working smarter. Protect your mental bandwidth so you can show up as your best self, both in and out of the office.

How do you manage mental overload during busy weeks?

In addition to other member resources, the Professional Development Program has developed and posted to the State Bar website checklists, forms, articles and links to relevant resources to allow lawyers to follow best practices when engaged in succession planning, closing files, managing trust accounts, appearing before a tribunal in a virtual setting and starting a small law firm. You can find them at the Professional Development Program tab on the State Bar’s website.
