FEEDING BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT

Dear Friends,

As we close out February, I find myself reflecting on the fact that we are now two-thirds of the way through this fiscal year—a year marked by profound change, uncertainty, and unrest. Shifting government policies have left many feeling vulnerable, anxious, and uncertain about the future.

At Bread and Life, these changes urge us to reflect deeply on our mission and the path ahead. How do we continue to honor the dignity of every person when so many are being marginalized, forced to hide, and living in fear? How can we best serve those in need during such uncertain times?

February is also known as the month of love, a time when millions of dollars are spent on chocolates, balloons, and other material symbols of affection. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could extend some of that love to those around us—especially those who are struggling, marginalized, or on the fringes of society? Imagine if we shared a smile, opened a door for a stranger, or shared a meal with someone from a different walk of life. What a beautiful way to celebrate love!

In just a few weeks, we will enter the season of Lent, a time for personal reflection. This Lenten season, here are the commitments I hope to make:

  • I will pause before speaking, choosing words that uplift rather than hurt, remembering that kindness is the key.
  • I will greet each day with gratitude, recognizing the many blessings in my life.
  • I will seek joy in life’s simple pleasures, desiring less and appreciating more.
  • I will be more patient with others and with myself, showing compassion especially toward those who are different from me.
  • And I will place my trust in God, listening more and complaining less.

What will you do during this Lenten season?

This year, our Lenten campaign will run from March 5 through April 21, in partnership with Food Bazaar’s shopping bag sale. The specially designed bags feature both the Food Bazaar and Bread and Life logos, set against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge. These reusable bags serve a dual purpose—they help the environment and support Bread and Life! Available in all Food Bazaar locations starting March 3, 100% of the proceeds will benefit our emergency food programs. If you haven’t already visited a Food Bazaar, we encourage you to check it out—you’ll love the store, and your purchase will help us make a difference!

As we face a new administration and shifting policies, we must remain committed to supporting our neighbors and guests who are at risk of losing access to basic necessities. Silence is not an option. Our Vincentian mission calls us to serve each person as though we were serving Christ himself. By doing so, we stay true to our core values. Ultimately, we all share the desire for a peaceful life—one with safe homes, food on our tables, and meaningful work that allows us to contribute to society.

To paraphrase a powerful quote: We are strongest when we lift each other up, not when we tear each other down. I believe that, together, we can be a greater force for good in the world.

With Gratitude,

Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM

Executive Director

At Bread & Life, we celebrate

Black life, culture, and history—

not just in February, but every day.

Our home in Bedford-Stuyvesant has long been a beacon for

Black pioneers in politics, music, theater, activism, and education.

This month, we honor their legacy and the countless contributions that continue to inspire our community.

Lent is a season of reflection, sacrifice, and renewal—a time to embrace gratitude and extend kindness. As we journey through these 40 days, let’s come together to provide 40,000 meals for our neighbors facing hunger. Your generosity can be a beacon of hope. A single gift, no matter the size, brings warmth, nourishment, and dignity to those struggling to feed their families.

In preparation for Lent, let’s focus on the good in our lives. Let’s be patient,

gentle, and generous. Let’s cherish what we have and share with those in need.

Make your Lenten sacrifice one that fills empty plates and hungry hearts.

Give hope today. Change a life.

From March 5th to April 17th, here’s another meaningful way to give back during Lent! We're partnering with Food Bazaar Supermarket—stop by your local store to pick up a Bread & Life Limited-Edition Tote for just $5. Every tote purchased helps provide food for a family in need, with 100% of proceeds supporting St. John’s Bread & Life’s mission to fight food insecurity.

Together, we can make a difference!

We’re thrilled to spotlight Jillian Battey, whose dedication as a volunteer has been truly invaluable. Her commitment to our mission and unwavering support for our guests have made a lasting impact. We’re excited to announce that Jillian is now officially part of the Bread & Life team as a Food Pantry Assistant! Her compassion and guidance are unmatched, and we welcome her with open arms!
