Greetings from Rockfish Presbyterian Church!
It was a beautiful, sunny day in Nellysford, VA, as I turned left when I saw the sign for “Rockfish Presbyterian Church." I got my first look at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, sitting at an angle and sloping down a hill. It was not until I drove to the back parking lot that I saw that the building extended quite a ways down that hill!
Rockfish PC has a long history spanning 250 years and more! At a previous visit to one of our congregations, I may have misspoken about a portion of their history, so I will try to get things correct this time. Rockfish was granted its status as a Presbyterian Church in 1746, and this heritage is present in the cemetery, where several veterans of the American Revolutionary War are buried.
Oh yes, in case you did not notice on the photo of their sign below, worship begins at 8:00 a.m. for this congregation. Eight. A. M.
When you enter from the back lot, you'll see above the doorway on the other side of the building a banner (pictured below). When you go into the sanctuary, you enter a wonderful worship place (see below photo). It is a two-story room, with a balcony that has served various historical purposes on two of the walls. Of course, the best part of the sanctuary was the people in the pews!
During worship, the youth of Rockfish laid their hands upon me and prayed over me! Such a blessing.
A second thing that I remember clearly is this: the choir! I would like to challenge Rockfish’s sister Presbyterian churches to come together and share music with one another in a choir gathering. Not a competition, mind you, but a celebration of music ministry in that part of the Presbytery. Pick a date, and I will be there!
Following worship, time was spent with the Session, talking “shop,” but more than that, forming connections. They are a wonderful group. This entire day was what I hoped it would be—a time to worship and share fellowship with one of our many congregations. It is my goal to be with you all as often as I can, to see the churches, and to meet the congregations.
So, for now, let me thank Rockfish, as well as Powhatan, Gum Springs, and Brett Reed Memorial Presbyterian Churches, for inviting me—and by some measure, the presbytery—to be in fellowship with you.
Blessings,
Kerry
