FREE Live Music & Events at Saluda Outfitters and Green River Eddy’s Tap Room & Grill

Saturday, March 1, 6-9 p.m. | The Justin Corbett Band is a blue-collar Forest City band that shares its love and roots for country music with a southern rock twist. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Justin Corbett was raised on traditional country music and enjoys covering a variety of classics from Hank Williams, Jr., to more modern musical icons such as Jamey Johnson. Joining Justin on stage are band members Phillip Jenkins, a multi-instrumentalist with a family legacy of bluegrass and roots to the legendary Snuffy Jenkins. Phillip sings harmony and plays bass/dobro/banjo/guitar. Tyler Dodson, lead guitarist/vocalist, has a knack for southern soul and outlaw country music. Also, Robert Corbett, who has been playing drums since an early age, brings the thump in the stylings of the Bama Band and other southern rock icons.

Friday, March 7, 6-9 p.m. | The Bearded Bards band brings its eclectic high energy mix of Blues, Rock, Americana and Roots music to Saluda Outfitters’ live music stage. These four seasoned WNC musicians will be cranking up the fun with Michael “Country” Carver on lead guitar/vocals; Bill Loftus on lead guitar, harmonica, piano\vocals.; Donald Yelton on bass /vocals and Kyle Lami on drums.

Saturday, March 8, 6-9 p.m. | Pearls Collide is a duo that came together by happenstance on the streets of Tryon. Keith Troutman, an ex-pro baseball player, was busking and talking with passersby when Tiffany came along. For fun Tiffany sang while Keith played, and it was clear they were a musical match! They wanted their duo to have a name that was meaningful. They believed Pearls Collide encompassed the Bible verse, Matthew 13, that describes all people as pearls of great price. And it seemed as though they were two pearls that collided. They are a Hits cover band spanning from the 50's to current day always expanding their playlist.

Saturday, March 15, 6-9 p.m. | Kit Lindsay is a Landrum, South Carolina native and a storyteller full of wit and grit. Her catalogue reads like a collection of old mountain wives’ tales combined with gospel hymns but is backed by belty, raw vocals that are reminiscent of blues and outlaw country powerhouses. Band members Leah McPhail (pedal steel), Chris Little (drums, percussion), and Ben Cadle (bass) amplify the funky honky tonk sound that Kit’s following expects. Rowdy, edgy, and loyally country, their live show isn’t one to miss.

Friday, March 21, 6-9 p.m. |DogDay BlueJay is a low-key acoustic trio based in Greenville, SC, playing originals and singer-songwriter type favorites of Dylan, Kristofferson, Parsons, Willie, Waylon, Clapton, Shaver and many others. Acoustic guitars, standup bass, mandolin and Dobro create pleasant music by these long-time local musicians. Band members include Joanie Sanders on bass/vocals; Mark McAfee on guitar/vocals; and Matt Purintan on mandolin/vocals.

Saturday, March 22, 6-9 p.m. | Bruised Rhino is an Americana jam band from Shelby, N.C. The group boasts multi-instrumentalists that play an eclectic mix of Americana/blues/soul and psychedelia backed by outstanding vocals. Bruised Rhino offers a genre crossing and boundary pushing musical experience. Making up this 5-member band is Joe Hindsley on harmonica/vocals; Mike Claprood on bass; Randy Mach on guitar/mandolin/vocals; Pedro Fraginals on guitar/vocals; and Cornelius Logan on drums/vocals.

Friday, March 28, 6-9 p.m. | The Elliott Morgan Duo consists of musical partners, Elliott Morgan on guitar and lead vocals and Tim Morelock on cajon, bass, and backup vocals. Both musicians were born and raised in Spartanburg, SC, and specialize in genres ranging from country and classic rock to R&B, folk, blues, and alternative.

Saturday, March 29, 6-9 p.m. | The Ned Lucas Band is a 3-piece, high-energy unit that plays original blues and rock’n’roll. With 3 critically acclaimed CD’s that have received airplay worldwide this band knows how to please a crowd. Ned Lucas is a true triple threat. Not only is he a smokin’ guitar-slinger and a monster on the Hammond B3, he also writes all of the original songs his band performs like “Mica Moon” that has received airplay in numerous markets across the US. For covers, the band chooses songs that reflect the influences of great artists like Joe Cocker and The Beatles. Playing a Fender Stratocaster, the workhorse of the electric blues, through an old tweed tube amp and a LED lighted Leslie cabinet, the sound is instantly recognizable. This band brings a full-size Hammond organ to every show. The rhythm section for the band includes Sam Savoca on drums and George Fiori on bass. These guys are pros and have been together for over 8 years, 4 with The Ned Lucas Band. Sam's drumming is best described as hard-hitting, precise, and deep in the pocket. George is a solid bassist with experience in numerous genres and confidently secures the foundation of this trio.

The French Family Band ~ Sunday Night Concert

March 30th, 2025 at 7:00

Ticket Link - $25

Country music just sounds better when a family sings it. That’s where it all began: mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all huddled together, picking and singing on a porch in the twilight. That’s why when The French Family launch into the bittersweet ache of a classic or the startling tenderness of one of their self-penned original songs, the hairs on country music loving necks stand up, and we instinctively––sometimes tearfully––recognize this father, mother, and son as the real thing. “We hope our music takes people back to a time when the essence of country music was twangy guitars, honest songs, and vocals that tear your heart out.”

Murder On the Good Ship Lollipopooza

By Cappy Hall Rearick

I am a passenger on the Good Ship Lollipopooza navigated by the intrepid Captain Crunch who refuses to make port because he doesn’t want to get his ship dirty. So, we keep sailing and sailing while the chefs keep cooking and cooking, and bartenders keep pouring and pouring.

One night, after two, okay make it three martinis, as I waited for the elevator to arrive, I overheard an older couple chatting away. I never intend to eavesdrop, but hey, I'm a writer. It's what I do. You've been warned.

He said, "Murder can be made to look like suicide. Piece of cake."

My ears perked up and my martini legs wobbled as I leaned in to hear more. I claim to be a writer (see above) but I don’t claim to have a lick of sense.

I stepped on the elevator along with them, but I stayed near the emergency button just in case.

He said, "If we're going to do the deed tonight we should probably get out of these clothes."

She gave him a look. "You're right. Wouldn’t want to mess up my good shoes."

He said, "Not to mention that pretty dress you're wearing."

OMG. It’s Bonnie and Clyde living out a chapter in a dime novel.

I moved closer to the red emergency button.

Looking at them, I thought they would easily pass for grandparents in a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving painting. I could see him decked out in the suit worn only twice a year, and sporting a catawampus holiday bow tie. I saw him holding a knife about to carve the turkey. She would be smiling sweetly at his side wearing a holiday apron and holding a steaming bowl of yams with little miniature marshmallows on top.

Clearing my throat I said, "Excuse me?" They looked up as though seeing me for the first time. "I didn’t mean to listen to your conversation, but it's only fair to warn you that I'm a newspaper columnist and I may have, MIGHT have overheard the word murder come up as we were getting on the elevator. Now y’all look to me to be a nice couple probably with a bunch of grandkids, right? So, I heard wrong. Right?"

They looked at me but uttered not a word. They didn't even blink!

That's when I got very up close and personal with the big red button.

While I was jabbering, they tore their eyes away from me, looked at each other and burst out laughing. I was not amused. I was freakin’ freaked out.

“Hey, I'm just a small-time columnist," I said defensively. "I don't write for a biggie like the New York Times or the Daily News, so whatever you’re planning you don’t need to worry. Your secret is safe with me. But you should know that writers like me, well, we make a habit of eavesdropping because we live very dull lives, so we have to steal life from other people. Not nice married couples like you, though. We wouldn’t do that. I'm rambling, aren't I? Why don’t we forget everything I thought I heard you say. I'll get off the elevator like right this minute. Would that be okay with you?"

He said, "We're not married. Not to each other."

She said, "He's a better lover than a husband, aren’t you, Cupcake?"

TMI! He turned to her and said tenderly, "Oh Sweet cheeks! I wouldn’t call you a slouch."

OMG. Will this elevator never stop?

She eyeballed me, "Take it from me, dear heart, you gotta make hay while the sun shines."

He laughed. "And you gotta make Betty while Fred's moon shines." Then they both started laughing like a couple of mental patients. "She's Betty; I'm Fred. Get it?"

I so wanted off that freaking elevator.

Betty leaned over, nuzzled Fred right in front of me, big as you please. "Oh Fred, you kill me, you know that?"

The elevator door finally opens and I gallop out of there faster than Sea Biscuit on crack. When I looked back at them, they were checking me out and laughing.

Fred waved. "Hey you, Miss Brenda Starr! Meet us up on Deck 12 at midnight for the Murder Mystery Game Finale. It's been going on all week, but with your imagination, you’ll catch up in no time.”

At least that’s what I thought I heard him say …

Saluda Community Table

“One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals” (Jean Vanier). The same is true when community organizations become partners. Since our first Farm to Table meal in August of 2023, we’re always on the lookout for ways to support and partner with our local farmers.

We found a perfect match with the Foothills Farm to Fork Trail Scholarship Program. They support the education of future agricultural and hospitality professionals through two scholarship awards each year. The winners are college-bound high school seniors who reside in Polk or Rutherford Counties

Verlie Murphy, one of Saluda’s best-known quilters, donated a stunning quilt to the SCT for a raffle. We designated some of the proceeds as a donation to the scholarship fund! It felt right to pay forward Verlie’s generosity! Together, we will accomplish more to benefit our community and young future farmers!

We hope you’ll join us for supper on Tuesday, March 11 to celebrate our partnership with the Foothills Farm to Fork Trail Scholarship Program. Kelly Elliott of Caitlyn Farms and other board members will be on hand for the presentation of this year’s donation. We haven’t decided on the menu, but you can always count on being well fed and having a great time.

Please mark your calendar for Tuesday March 25th when our friends from the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration will feed us a delicious springtime meal.

Meals are at the Senior Center from 5:30 – 7pm (2nd & 4th Tuesday of the month) and are always free with donations appreciated. Designated Handicap Drop Off/Pick Up is located at the front door. Parking is available around the Center, at the Railroad Tracks, and the Methodist Church.

The Saluda Pantry is grateful for being able to remain open in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene with the generous support of donations from individuals and businesses. Green River Adventures offered their business location to open a temporary pantry and we will be forever grateful! This allowed us to have no interruption in service and help all those in need.

We are thankful for the “disaster relief” grant from the Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF) which will help pay for water remediation to prevent further flooding at our original location. This is the first, and most important, step before we can move back. Thank you, PCCF, for the support you have given us since we opened our doors.

The Pantry plans to move back to the former location at the Fellowship Hall soon. Some needed repairs and updates are scheduled that resulted from the flooding. As we work our way through restoring the building, the Saluda Pantry Board and volunteers are grateful for our supporters and having the opportunity to continue serving the Saluda Community.

Join us as we welcome our very first Student Ambassador, Benedetta Formisano, back to Saluda. This special evening will feature live acoustic music with an Italian flair, light hors d’oeuvres provided by the Saluda Sister City, and a heartfelt talk from Benedetta about how her travels to Saluda have shaped her life. Beverages will be available for purchase from Salud!, and donation buckets will be on hand to support both our talented musicians and the Sister City program.

Drop in any time between 4:00 and 6:00 to celebrate the power of cultural exchange, music, and community in an evening of connection and inspiration. We look forward to seeing you there!

April 6 - Lazy Girl - The trail traverses a stream and connects Esseola Drive through the woods to Laurel Drive in Saluda. No pets on this walk. EASY

Walkers meet at the parking lot of the Saluda Library at 2 pm. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the history, flora, and fauna of the area.

Prepare for each walk with comfortable shoes, a walking stick, water, and maybe a snack. Feel free to bring your field guides and a camera. Please provide any pertinent medical history to your guide. Many of these hikes will access private property. SCLT has obtained the owners' permission to allow you to access these areas that are normally not available to the public.

Twin Lakes Workday

As many of you know, Twin Lakes is one of SCLT’s gems which is booked every summer for both swimming lessons and rental by families for hiking, fishing and swimming. When Twin Lakes was first built, it was designed in such a way that the groundwater was meant to bypass the lakes through underground culverts and a bypass stream on the eastern side. That stream runs to a man-made waterfall underneath a stone arched bridge at the end of the fishing lake. Moss, azaleas and flowering native plants established over the last 40 years adds ambiance to the property. With time and multiple strong storms, the bypass stream has experienced erosion that impacts or intrudes on the fishing lake.

Last spring, Laura Belanger PWS of BluelIne Environmental Consultants from Greenville kindly came to meet with us at Twin Lakes and, using her experience in the field, developed an engineered plan to help re-establish and control further erosion. This plan needs to be implemented by moving dirt, placing Coir fabric on the bank, and reintroducing native plantings. We will also need to seed the new dirt and put straw over the newly seeded area.

This is where the members of our community come in!

We need volunteers to come to help move dirt, place the fabric, and plant the live stakes to stabilize the area. We are asking volunteers to bring shovels, rakes and wear boots to work in the wet environment. We plan to work on Sunday March 23 and ask that volunteers come to help starting at 1:00 pm.

When: Sunday March 23rd

Time: 1:00 pm

Where: 255 Linda Lane, Saluda, NC

Thank you for helping us ensure the long term health of this

wonderful community resource.

Youth Partner Challenge

Once again SCLT will sponsor the Youth Partner Challenge with students of Saluda Elementary School. The goal of the challenge is to have fun by encouraging youth to become good stewards of the land. The hikes are all family friendly and if too difficult, can be adapted and still qualify for the challenge. The challenge is for youth to complete 7 of the hikes and a service project. Students who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and embroidered patch.

Walks will be on the first and third Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm except the walks in July and August which will begin at 10:00 am.

Each student will keep a log and passport of his or her progress.

Full details will be included in a letter to all parents.

Pearsons Falls and Glen Update

Our team continues to work to restore Pearson’s Falls and Glen and our hopes are that later in 2025 we will be open to the public.

Two separate contractors have been retained to clear debris to make way for trail restoration, all without disturbing the botanical preserve we all know and love. It’s hard to be patient, but we know the wait will be worth it.

Thanks for your interest and support.

Preserving Saluda’s Past for its Future

We announced last month that the Historic Saluda Committee (HSC) is transitioning into a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization! Our new name will be Historic Saluda, Inc. If you missed it, here are the details.

Since 2010, the HSC has proudly served as an advisory committee to the City of Saluda, accomplishing numerous projects and fostering greater awareness of our town’s rich history. Over the past 15 years, we’ve championed historic preservation and built a strong foundation for the future. Now, we believe the time is right to grow further and strengthen our mission by transitioning into a nonprofit organization.

This change opens exciting opportunities, including fulfilling our longstanding dream of creating a museum to celebrate and share Saluda’s fascinating history. One of our most notable accomplishments has been collecting and preserving oral histories. These stories, told by the people of Saluda, will play a central role in the museum, bringing our history to life. We are excited to announce that our museum will be located in the historic Saluda Presbyterian Church Sanctuary. We are incredibly humbled by this gift. Stay tuned for more details regarding the church.

Our goal is to honor Saluda’s expansive history, from the earliest settlers who established Pace’s Gap—later becoming Saluda—to the many individuals and families who have shaped our community. Remarkably, several of our board members are direct descendants of these settlers or others who left an indelible mark on our town’s history.

Thanks to your generosity, we already have a strong foundation for the museum. Over the years, you have entrusted us with old photographs, documents, and artifacts, many of which have been digitized and preserved in our archive room at the library. Archiving remains a top priority, and we can’t wait to share these treasures with everyone.

Our vision is for the museum to belong to the people of Saluda—a space to enjoy, support, and nurture, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.

We have so many exciting plans ahead, but it’s too early to share all the details. As we grow, we ask for your patience and support during this time of rebranding, strategic planning, and creation.

Thank you for believing in our mission and for being a vital part of preserving Saluda’s history. Together, we’ll ensure that our town’s story continues to be told for years to come.

The best way to keep up to date is to follow us here and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/historicsaluda/

An avid railroad memorabilia collector, Bo started collecting his railroad antiques when he was 12 years old. His grandfather who worked for Southern Railway for 40+ years, gave him a Southern “shorty” lantern, a long neck oiler and a silver Southern thermos. That began a lifetime pursuit of collecting Southern Railway.

River Dog Run Marches into Spring!

We are declaring it “Spring” at River Dog Run so join us in celebrating sunshine and warmer weather! Yes, March can be a cross between the last hurrah of winter and blessed warmth and we always hope for the best! And this is our sixth spring of being in Saluda and we have loved every minute of it!

With the hope of Spring we start thinking about our favorite room..the porch! Many events in Saluda are centered around this well-used and beloved room; many houses in Saluda are built around the covered open-air space! Make a fresh start to the season with a new pillow for a chair or chaise. “Life is better on the porch” is a favorite as is the ever popular “I love you more today than yesterday! Yesterday you really got on my nerves.” We also have decorative pillows with no sassy verbiage! If you need new lighting, we have porch-worthy lamps in singles or pairs.

Since some drinks and appetizers are often served on these verandas you may need a new dish or platter for serving. We have unique sets of bowls and platters. Our Brie dish is very popular since it comes with a bonus recipe for Brie with Kahlua and Pecans. Serving dinner is often an option on the porch and we have Mushroom Quiche and Blueberry Cobbler dishes that can go from oven to table.

And rugs to finish off your décor on the porch! All our rugs have stories, and most have an international pedigree. A wealth of colors and sizes await your feet so come enjoy them! We also have an eclectic selection of artwork both local and vintage,

We have a new stock of our popular aprons/tunics and it is so nice to think of putting a tee shirt and legging under them rather than a sweater. They are truly a year-round garment, but it is so heartening to lighten them up!

To make your porch or a room smell fabulous try one of our candles! Carolina Pine has been a winter favorite but Green River Currant is becoming more popular as the weather lightens up. We also have Saluda Smitten, Mountain Magnolia and Blackberry Trails and Grapefruit that all have their devotees!

Since entertaining at home is also on the rise, think about hostess gifts! We have sassy and funny tea towels, very useful garlic graters and leather bookmarks. Any would be welcome additions to a hostess repertoire.

We are open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday so come peruse our offerings.

Hours are Monday, Thursday through Saturday 11-5PM and Sunday noon to 4PM.

For questions or more information please call 828-551-1461.

We always welcome our four-legged friends with a biscuit and a bowl of water!

As the daffodils start to peak through the snowy mountainside, we are reminded that beautiful spring is just around the corner! Stop by Wildflour Bakery for spring inspired sweet treats and brunch specials! "Beethoven tells you what it's like to be Beethoven and Mozart tells you what it's like to be human. Bach tells you what it's like to be the universe." — Douglas Adams

Spring is coming!? Well, our spring line is coming, whether the weather cooperates or not. Just start thinking about lighter weight clothing, cool shades and fabrics, shorts and cotton slacks. We’ll have some awesome tees, plus our own branded Saluda Outfitters and Green River Eddy’s Tap Room & Grill comfy tees (and hoodies for those continuing cooler evenings around the campfire.)

It's that time of year to begin checking your outdoor gear. Do you need some new camping equipment? We stock those great cooking items that travel well and are easy to care for like our GSI outdoor boiler pots and glacier stainless one person mess kits. Or how about a two person Sea to Summit Alpha Set? We have pot grippers, folding spoons, three-piece ring cutlery and TEK towels in various sizes.

Do you need a new fishing pole or some flies? We even accommodate the little fishing lovers with poles to cast a marshmallow over the campfire, kits for making smores and more. Keep your cell phone safe with our Smart Phone Waterproof Pouch by Wilcor. On our camping shelf we have Expander sleeping bag liners and Thermolite fabric reactors. And you can always get your favorite EMO sleeping bag. For water loves, check out our NRS products, including gloves. We have some Black Diamond helmets and Werner paddles.

Our spring line of shoes will be heading this way, too. We have a great selection of shoes right here in Saluda. No need to travel to find what you need. Chaco and Astral provide comfortable footwear for hiking or partaking in water activities.

Another good thing about the approach of warmer weather is the BIG winter clothing sales. Check out some 30% to 40% off racks. If you get there soon, you might capture a Kuhl Spyfire Parka, which comes in both men’s and women’s sizes. These jackets hold their value, and you can wear them for years. They are lightweight, less bulky and have thermal body mapping.

One of the best parts about spring and warmer weather heading our way is that our customers can enjoy relaxing on our expansive deck, chatting over lunch or dinner while enjoying a craft beer, glass of wine or a cocktail.
