From the Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge
With a heavy heart, I share with you that Jeffrey McLellan died suddenly and unexpectedly this week at his home in the desert. Jeffrey was a beloved member of this congregation, co-chair of the food pantry for nearly a decade, a faithful acolyte of the 8am service, using his beautiful voice as a reader on Sunday mornings, and a dear friend to many within and beyond this church community. His partner was with him at the time death, and we extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends. Let us pray:
O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our brother Jeffrey. We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with the family and friends of Jeffrey in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A service will hopefully be held here at St. John’s Cathedral in the near future. More information will be shared as it becomes known.
With love and blessings,
Anne+

Let your prayers arise like incense and embrace a time to "be still" and inwardly digest the presence of God among us. Compline has been the last office of prayer before the close of day since the sixth century. The short liturgy is divided into several sections: the chanting of psalms, scripture, and prayers. Reception to follow.

Shrove Tuesday
Tuesday, March 4
Please join us on Shrove Tuesday this coming week. The Revs. Mel and Anne will make and serve pancakes for a delicious supper at 5.00 p.m. prior to the burning of palms for Ash Wednesday. We hope to see you. You are most welcome to help prepare or serve dinner, or simply enjoy an evening together. After, at 6:30pm we will burn palms from last year during a simple service.
After members who are taking advantage of Canon Earl's gift of tickets to Disney Hall all will be able to depart on time. This is the final day before Ash Wednesday and the forty-day period of Lent begins. The Anglican tradition of eating pancakes on this day stretches back to medieval times as a way to use up rich ingredients like butter, milk, sugar, and eggs before Lent which holds its own traditions of fasting and penitence.

Ash Wednesday
Wednesday, March 5
7.00 a.m., 12.00 p.m., 7.00 p.m.
The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting (BCP 264-65).
You are invited, in the name of the Church, to observe a holy Lent. St. John’s Cathedral will offer services at 7am, 12pm and 7pm, and Ashes to Go throughout the day. The 7am service will be a simple service of prayer, confession and ashes. The 12pm service will include a sermon and Holy Eucharist, and 7pm service will include a sermon, Holy Eucharist and music. We hope to see you.

Who will win the Golden Halo?
If you’ve not heard about Lent Madness…it’s sort of like March Madness, but instead of basketball it’s about saints and their stories. A member of the parish, Gloria Flowers, recently shared with the Rev. Mel that she’s a fan – perhaps you will be too! By the time Holy Week comes along, you’ll see how God works in the lives of ordinary people to shine the light of Christ’s love in a world in need of hope.
Purchase your own full size Lent Madness bracket poster from Forward Movement.

Being a Sanctuary Diocese
From The Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor
As reports come in about ICE raids around the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, I write to remind my siblings in Christ that, by act of diocesan convention in December 2016, we are a sanctuary diocese.
“Sanctuary” is generally but not exclusively understood as sheltering immigrant workers and their families in churches. I’m not aware of any of our 133 missions and parishes which currently do so. This doesn’t rule it out if circumstances warrant. We look forward to joining with colleagues in the ecumenical and interfaith community in mounting legal challenges if the current administration follows through on its stated intention to violate the sanctity of churches and other places of worship when they shelter those fleeing unjust power.
