Master Irrigator 2025 is Underway!

We are underway for Master Irrigator Class of 2025! February 19th marked Session I, Session II followed on February 26th with 21 producers in attendance this year. The Master Irrigator Program is an irrigation management curriculum made up of 24 hours of intensive irrigation education conducted over four one-day sessions to show producers how to maximize advanced conservation irrigation management and conservation practices that work together to save water, conserve energy, build soil health and enhance farm profitability.

At the end of the program along with all the knowledge producers gain from the curriculum, graduates can apply for a $10,000 cost share on water efficient equipment for their operations. This equipment includes: soil moisture probes, piviot conversions, VFDs and more.

The class of 2025 Session III will take place on March 5th, and Session IV will be held on March 12th. If you would like to attend a future Master Irrigator class, contact Baylee Barnes at bbarnes@northplainsgcd.org to be put on the contact list for 2026.

Winter Water Levels Progress So Far!

As of February 20, 2025, the district staff has visited 380 of the district's 356 wells in the observation network, a completion rate of 84% thus far for the season. The staff is scheduled to complete the remaining wells by the March 1st deadline. The staff has a success rate of 95% in getting a measurement from the wells.

Ogallala Commons will be hosting a Rainwater Harvesting Conference on March 27th and 28th in Amarillo, Texas. This conference will focus on collecting, storing and utilizing rainwater from rooftops, parking lots and other hard surfaces. While our landscapes, soils, and playas are the largest harvesters of rainwater, we have many structures that could provide residents and businesses with a means to collect high quality water to reduce our reliance on groundwater. This event will offer information and ideas, as well as field tours, exhibits during break sessions, and opportunities to network and build strategies for regenerating our water resources.
