Dear Tubman Families,

February is here, and with it comes exciting opportunities to celebrate, support, and grow as a school community!

This month, we proudly recognize Black History Month, and our teachers will be highlighting Black excellence throughout February. We also have morning announcements each day that focus on important figures in Black History. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home and celebrate the many contributions of Black leaders, artists, and changemakers.

We are also celebrating National School Counseling Week and want to express our deep appreciation for Mrs. Beeker, our incredible school counselor. Her kindness and dedication help make Tubman a welcoming and supportive place for all students.

Additionally, we are excited to introduce a new 4th grade tutoring pilot program! Our current 4th grade students began kindergarten remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and kindergarten is a crucial year for reading development. Last year, this group showed below-average growth, and we want to ensure they are well-prepared for 5th grade, a key CPS promotion year. This is a pilot program, which we hope to expand to other grade levels next year, if successful. Thanks to funding from Friends of Tubman (FOT), this program will provide targeted support through the end of the year.

We also have great news to share—Tubman’s Creative Schools Certification is excelling! A huge congratulations to Mr. Hall, Ms. C., and all of our teachers and staff who help make the arts a priority for our students.

We’ve noticed a positive shift in recess safety since adjusting our recess locations, with fewer playground incidents now that classrooms are spread across different areas—the playground, north turf, south turf, and basketball court. While we understand that some students miss playing with friends from other classes, this change has helped create a safer and more structured recess experience. In the coming months, we will review the recess schedule to explore opportunities for same-grade classrooms to play together when possible. Additionally, during indoor recess, all students will be together in the gym, as it is our only large indoor recess space. Thank you for your support as we continue to prioritize student safety and well-being!

Finally, we are now accepting Local School Council (LSC) student applications for our 6th and 7th grade students interested in becoming the LSC student representative next year. Applications are due by February 7th, and the selected student will begin their role in July 2025.

Thank you for your continued support—let’s make it a fantastic February at Tubman!

In Partnership,

Principal Hammaker
