At Child and Family Services, we believe that every young adult deserves the opportunity to build a successful and independent future. Our Next Level Independent Living Plus Program is designed to support foster youth aged 16-19 as they transition into adulthood. Through hands-on learning and guidance, we help young people develop critical life skills, establish stability, and prepare for a self-sufficient future. Participants engage in activities that foster independence, such as education about financial literacy, job readiness, household management, and emotional well-being.
However, these young adults cannot do it alone. One of the most crucial aspects of our program is mentorship, is mentorship—caring and consistent adults helping guide youth through this critical stage of life.
Why Mentorship Matters
Many of the youth in our program have faced adversity. They often lack reliable, supportive adult figures outside of the program staff. Consistency is key—these young people need mentors who are dependable and willing to build relationships over time. Even an hour a month can make a profound impact by fostering stability, trust, and a sense of belonging.
How You Can Help
Mentors play an important role in teaching essential life skills, including:
- Home improvement – Basic repairs and home maintenance
- Car care – How to maintain and troubleshoot common vehicle issues
- Cooking & Cleaning – Essential skills for independent living
- Crafting – A creative and therapeutic outlet
- Finances – Budgeting, saving, and managing expenses
- Time Management – Developing healthy habits for work and school
- Mindfulness & Mental Health – Emotional well-being and stress management
- Animal Companionship – Healing through time spent with dogs and other animals
- Fun Outings – Providing experiences that enrich their lives
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome individuals with experience working with youth, particularly those who understand trauma and resilience. The greatest need for mentors is during weekday afternoons/evenings and Sunday afternoons into the evening.
By volunteering as a mentor, you are providing more than just guidance—you are offering hope, consistency, and a sense of belonging.
Are you ready to be the ONE to make a difference? Join us today and help shape the future of these young individuals. Fill out our volunteer form by visiting https://www.cfsnwmi.org/apply-to-volunteer. For more info reach out to Kendall Spratt, Independent Living Plus Coach at KSpratt@cfs3l.org.
