Duran Family Receives Crucial Repairs for
Home in Dinuba
| | |
In partnership with Self-Help Enterprises (SHE), the Duran family’s experience with the City of Dinuba Housing Rehabilitation Program highlights the profound impact of timely support for homeowners in need. Roberto and Martha Duran, who have owned their home since 2004, faced a series of challenges over the years, particularly as Roberto’s health declined and they struggled with limited income. The home they raised their family in, now housing their 11-year-old grandson, had deteriorated to the point of being unsafe.
Once the repairs began, the Duran family saw dramatic changes. Their home, which had been plagued by a leaky roof, faulty electrical wiring, and other safety hazards, was now undergoing vital upgrades. Through the program, they received a new roof, new air conditioning, updated electrical systems, and new flooring in the kitchen and bathroom. These repairs were essential to restoring safety and comfort to the home, allowing the Durans to move back in this past December to a much safer and more livable space.
Before the repairs, Roberto, who had been facing significant health challenges that made it difficult for him to manage repairs, was unable to address the home's issues himself. “The house was in terrible condition,” Roberto said. “The roof leaked when it rained, and the electrical system hadn’t worked properly for years.” With support from SHE, these hazards were eliminated, and the home was transformed into a safer and more functional space. “It’s like a completely different house now. It’s more lively, safer, and just feels like home,” Roberto shared. Read more

SHE Staff Mobilizes to Support
Southern California Fire Victims
| | |
Earlier this month, as devastating fires ravaged Southern California, SHE staff rallied to help those in need. With local water systems damaged and a critical shortage of bottled water, the SHE team sprang into action.
In just one day, donations poured in from staff, and enough bottled water was collected to fill two pallets. These donations, along with $270 in cash contributions, were quickly packed up and sent to Pasadena, where they will be distributed to those impacted by the fires.
This outpouring of support is a testament to the compassion and unity within the Self-Help Enterprises team, demonstrating the power of coming together in times of crisis. We are proud to have been able to assist those in need during this challenging time for Southern California.
If you would like to contribute or support in other ways, please contact Tami McVay, SHE’s Director of Emergency Services, at TamiM@selfhelpenterprises.org or 559-802-1671.

Watch the Full Video Celebrating 60 Years of Impact!
In celebration of Self-Help Enterprises’ 60th anniversary, we’ve created a special video, “6 Homes, 60 Years Later: Building a Legacy of Community,” highlighting our journey—from building our first self-help homes to impacting over 70,000 families through six key programs. This 30-minute video honors the families we’ve served through Mutual Self-Help Housing, Housing Rehabilitation, Emergency Services, and more, showcasing the lasting difference our work has made in communities over the years.
In addition to sharing modern-day stories, the video pays homage to our roots, drawing inspiration from the historic 1965 film “Six Homes, Six Houses” by the American Friends Service Committee. The original film documented the six families building their self-help homes during the early days of SHE’s incorporation. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come—from those first six families to the diverse range of families now benefiting from the variety of SHE programs.
We’re excited to share both films with you! Simply click on the links below to watch:
